Scar pov:
My throat was incredibly sore, and it took a moment for the realization to hit me—I had woken up the previous night being strangled by a very frightened bird. The memory sent a shiver down my spine. Sitting up was difficult; every muscle in my neck protested with sharp pangs of pain. Despite the discomfort, I forced myself to look around, the ache intensifying as I turned my head. I had to see who was at the door, curiosity overriding the pain.
Cub had answered the door, and I lay on the sofa, facing away from the front entrance. "Oh, you're actually awake," Cub remarked, moving to block my view of whoever was entering. It was frustrating, but I understood his concern. He appeared visibly worried, constantly rubbing his neck—an action that unconsciously made me do the same. However, a sudden wave of pain shot through my neck as I flinched hard. 'Ow,' I muttered quietly, my voice barely audible, much quieter than I had intended.
He finally moved out of the way, and I was able to see who had entered my home. To my surprise, it was two villains—not the ones I was hoping to see, but I knew I had to talk to them soon. "Wow, you're right, his neck does look awful. Grian must have been having nightmares again, huh?" Ren commented, walking over and sitting down beside me on the sofa. I just nodded slightly in response.
"Careful, Ren, you might hurt him even more if you touch his neck. Those bruises look ugly," Doc cautioned as he approached and leaned in from the other side of the sofa. Knowing he was an actual doctor, I didn't mind him examining my neck. His touch was methodical, but the pain was excruciating—it burned and stung fiercely.
I flinched away sharply when Doc pressed on a sensitive spot. "You know, I'm surprised he didn't kill you with how much pressure is behind this. You must have used some magic to protect yourself or something?" he asked, and I nodded in response.
"Too bad he's too strong to break through magic sometimes. In cases like this, it just made sure it didn't kill you... You probably can't talk for a while, huh? It hurts, doesn't it?" Doc continued, eventually pulling away from my neck after a thorough examination. Again, I nodded carefully, the pain making any movement difficult.
"Wouldn't be surprised if you don't want to babysit him anymore, especially with how protective Mumbo can be," Ren remarked, his tail twitching nervously beside him. His eyes flickered with a mix of concern and curiosity, unsure of how I would react. I didn't let any disappointment show on my face, silently accepting the inevitable distance that might come between Grian and me.
"Do you still want to hang out with him after he tried to kill you?" Doc asked cautiously, his voice tinged with genuine concern. He studied my expression carefully, perhaps searching for signs of hesitation or doubt. I paused to consider his question, weighing the events of the previous night against my feelings. Despite everything, a sense of loyalty and understanding toward Grian remained strong within me.
After a moment's reflection, I nodded slowly. The decision seemed clear to me, even if it appeared irrational to Cub, who gave me a perplexed look. Deep down, I knew that Grian's actions were not driven by malice but by fear and desperation. It was a complicated situation, one that demanded empathy and understanding rather than immediate judgment.
I couldn't shake the overwhelming sense of loneliness, realizing how much I genuinely missed their cave—the warm, inviting glow of its lights, the significance in every small detail. In contrast, this house felt like a cold, lifeless wooden box now. I pulled my legs up to my chin, resting my cheek against my knees in a gesture of comfort and withdrawal.
"You miss him, don't you?" Doc's voice broke through my thoughts after a brief observation. His tone held a mix of understanding and curiosity.
"You got attached to a villain? The infamous Hot Guy who never falls for anyone... Poultry Man? Really? He barely ever speaks," Doc continued, his words tinged with a hint of disbelief. His observation hit a nerve, making me reflect on the complexities of my feelings towards Grian—how I had grown fond of someone seemingly detached and enigmatic.
