Kenji Sato had never had a girlfriend before.
He barely even had friends.
Sure, he went to the occasional after-game celebration at a teammate's house, but he had a tendency to keep his distance with others: both teammates and groupies alike. Ever since he left Japan with his mother at a young age, it felt like it was just him, her, and baseball. He poured everything into the game: his anger towards his father, his frustration with school bullies, and his feelings of loneliness due to being in a new country. He felt at peace when he played and when he realized he was good, his pride grew. He didn't mind being called cocky in the news, he believed he had a right to be. Honestly he did; his stats were comparable to some of the greatest players of all time.
Kenji's devotion to baseball left little room for romance. There were girls he liked in middle and high school, even college, but between excelling at school to make his professor-parents proud and playing hard to secure a commitment to UCLA, he had no time for a girlfriend. After being drafted to the LA Dodgers, rumors about this model and that influencer didn't circle often, but even when they did, none of them were actually true. He knew he was pretty handsome, having grown out of that awkward phase at 16 years old, but the women that surrounded him in LA just... didn't do it for him. The way they chased him for his status really put him off. He was in no way a virgin, but he had never experienced real, true love. The love he saw in the movies. The love he read about in stories.
The love he saw between his mother and father before his father sent them away to be Ultraman.
Most of his days were the same: wake up, eat, practice, have a game, go home, and relax. Today was one of those days; he had just come home from practice to shower and eat absolute junk. The In-and-Out workers knew his order by heart at this point, and he dreamt of the cheeseburger he brought home while cold water washed away the dirt and sweat adorning his body. After his shower, he dried off and slipped into his pjs: a plain white tee and some black sweats. With a towel around his neck catching the water dripping from his wet hair, he walked through his penthouse, admiring the Los Angeles skyline from his floor to ceiling windows. He grabbed his burger from the kitchen counter and took a bite as he sank into his soft, black couch. He mindlessly scrolled on his phone, sending his mom a few TikToks she'd probably laugh at as he ate. 'I should pay her a visit soon,' he thought to himself, feeling a bit lonely. He had moved out officially over 4 years ago, but he couldn't help but miss her presence.
Feeling the silence around him grow more apparent, he asked Mina to turn on that song he liked. He had heard it a few times on the radio and it just stuck with him; the guitar, the singer's voice, and the beat were all so sensual, but catchy. He played it fairly often: on his motorcycle around the city, late at night while he was in the shower, or when he was on the treadmill; it was his earworm. A really good earworm. "Would you like me to put on The Tonight Show? STAAR is performing Kiss it Better tonight." Mina, his AI assistant asked, hovering near his position sprawled out on the couch.
