After Kenji sped off on his bike, (Y/n) returned to her friends who immediately had questions. All she could do was look at her feet, clutching her hands at her sides as her eyes welled with frustrated, confused tears. Reading the situation quickly, the girls surrounded her and ushered her out of the party, doing their best to shield her face from the paparazzi snapping photos outside. As they slipped into the car, (Y/n) felt the tears finally begin running down her face.

The only other person who knew about her relationship with her parents was Jasmine, who she considered the only real family she had left— yet she told him. Of course, she didn't go into excruciating detail; she didn't mention the yelling, screaming, crying, or disownment, but she still gave him that little bit of herself that she promised to keep locked up.

She remembered that day so clearly, as she did whenever she spoke about her parents. At 22 years old, it had only been a week since she graduated from Harvard with a degree in Biology. It was a cool late-spring morning and her parents were sitting in their kitchen drinking coffee. (Y/n) clutched the contract from Atlantic records in her sweaty hands and approached them, finally finding the courage to tell them what she wanted to do with her life. She was honest; she told them that she had amassed a decent following on social media for her music, she told them that she had been discovered through it, and she told them that she was signing the contract and moving to LA. They listened silently, faces unreadable for a moment before her father stood up and left the room. Her mother was different, though. She rose from her seat at the table and walked towards her daughter, stopping just a few feet away from her.

    "You are my greatest accomplishment..."

    (Y/n) smiled hopefully.

"And now, my greatest disappointment. My daughter will not be some singing whore," she spat, turning her back and following her husband. (Y/n) ran after them, tears in her eyes, begging them to hear her out. She had given her whole life for their dream of becoming a doctor, but now it was time that she chased her own. No matter how she articulated this, however, they remained stuck in their ways, so much so that they kicked her out, effectively disowning her. She lived with Jasmine after that, moving to LA together and becoming who they are now.

When they got back to her house, the girls gave her hugs and reassuring words.

"He's so stupid, like every other guy in the world."

"He isn't worth a single one of your tears, (Y/n), you pulled Michael B. Jordan for Christ's sake!" (Y/n) chuckled at that, remembering the way the actor stared at her when she passed by him on the red carpet of a movie premiere. She was a much smaller artist at the time, featuring on one of the tracks of the film, but the moment went viral, propelling her career even further. She wiped her face and smiled at her friends, feeling comforted by their presence.
