Chapter 49

The helicopter landed in the open field in front of Zhan's parents' country house. Yibo and the director rushed to the house and arrived there at the same time as Zhan's parents, who had immediately made their way back after Yibo called them in a panic and asked if they knew where Zhan was. The four of them rushed into the house and searched the whole place. The time was pressing. During the flight, Yibo and the director learned that the surveillance team outside the house of Kira Bell and the two men had been found dead in the car. Nor did they receive any better information from the surveillance team nearby. They too had been killed. So they hoped to find Zhan in the house. But there was no sign of Zhan anywhere.

A call from the headquarters explained that Zhan's cell phone signal had been tracked for the last time in the area. They sent the data to the cell phones of Yibo and the director. Yibo took a closer look at them. "Looks like he went for a walk." He said, tracing the line above his cell phone display that indicated the path Zhan's cell phone signal was taking.

Zhan's father also looked at Yibo's cell phone and said, "He's obviously gone off the road. But I'm not surprised. Zhan often gets lost in his thoughts and just wanders around aimlessly. And the last ping was over there at the edge of the forest."

"We'll wait here for the team and then go into the forest together. And until then, it would be good if you could tell me if there are any places in the forest where you can hide." Said the director, addressing Zhan's parents.

"There's not much. There's just an old forest hut there. But there's an entrance to a bunker in it." Zhan's father replied.

"A bunker? Is it accessible to everyone?" Yibo wanted to know.

"It shouldn't really be. But as far as I know, the bunker door has never been locked. Until a few years ago, a man from the village used to go there regularly to see what was going on. He once said that wild animals were always retreating into it and that's why the bunker door was never locked. As far as I know, no one has entered the bunker since he died." Zhan's dad explained.

"Can the bunker be reached by car?" The director wanted to know.

"No, you can't. The trees are too dense for that. And to be honest, the path through the forest is quite difficult. The closer you get to the bunker, the denser the overgrowth of trees and thorny bushes. But that also means that if someone has been there in the last few days, we can clearly see it in the vegetation." Zhan's mom explained.

"That's true. The bigger problem is that the upper part, the visible bunker, was supposed to be a guard post back then. There are openings to see if an enemy is approaching and openings for weapons. The door of the bunker is massive and cannot simply be kicked in. And then there are two more massive doors inside the bunker." Said Zhan's dad.

Zhan's mom remembered that a few years ago, when she and her husband had just moved into the country house and were exploring the area, they had taken pictures of the outer and inner bunker. She still had them on her cell phone and quickly looked them up. When she found the pictures, she passed the cell phone to Yibo, who then looked at the pictures together with the director. Yibo also sent the pictures to his own cell phone. "The pictures will definitely help us." Yibo said and then sent them to the director. Then silence fell between the four of them.

After about 15 minutes, they finally received the message that the first team would be there in about 10 minutes. Yibo felt that the time they spent waiting and still waiting and then having to confer was wasted time. And apparently Zhan's father thought so too. Because he secretly slipped Yibo a handgun with a silencer and 8 full magazines. They only communicated with each other by looking at each other. And the look on Zhan's father's face said: "Go!"
