"I'm so relieved," my mother exhales as I make her dinner in our tiny kitchen.

I smile at her over my shoulder. "Me too. The mortgage has been paid off, we don't have to worry about anything anymore, mum. We're going to be okay. Everything is going to be okay."

Her blue eyes glimmer with relief. "It is, isn't it?"

My hand continues stirring the vegetables that are cooking in a pan before I drape the spatula over the side. "Yeah," I nod confidently. "We're going to be okay. Always. I told you things would work themselves out."

She stands up from the kitchen table and walks towards me, pressing a soft kiss to my cheek. "Thank you for always being by my side and supporting me," she whispers.

"Chessman's is our business. I would never let you go through all of this by yourself." I state, wrapping my arms around her.

"Declan said that he's working with his solicitors to place the business back in our name but he explained that it isn't a straightforward process, it takes time. But he's been showing me the progress and soon it'll be officially ours." She murmurs into my chest before pulling away.

I nod and turn my attention back to the stove. "Well we trust him. I trust him. It might take time but it will always be ours."

"Of course," she says before sitting back down again. "I've got an interview for a new job next week."

My brows pinch together painfully. "You're getting another job?"

"I need one," she sighs, resting her head onto her fist. "We might be okay with the payments on the mortgage but I still want to work towards paying Declan back. After everything he's done, I won't rest until I've earnt at least a tiny bit to give him. I can't let him do this for nothing but out of his own kind will."

The corners of my lips slide into a grateful smile. "We can save together, mum," I nod. "I want to help as well. Even if he doesn't accept it, I want him to know that we're serious about this."

My mother studies me for a few moments, eyes still glimmering. "Agreed." Her fist drops. "I'm so proud to have you as a son, Luca. I don't know what I'd do without you. I'm so glad that you've found Declan and he treats you right, you deserve it."

"He does treat me right," I fold my arms over my chest, already dreaming about my perfect boyfriend. When am I not dreaming about him? "But I want to treat him better."

"Well that's easy," she says confidently. "You're you, Luca. You've always put people before yourself, show him just how much you love him."

My heart swells. I will, until the day I die.

I love Sunday mornings at Declan's. They're so peaceful. His house feels like a second home to me and I never feel out of place. He always makes sure that I have everything I need but little does he know that it's only him I need, everything else is an added bonus.
