(Sleeping on the couch in the Curtis household.)
Being a greaser was hard, he knew that. He stayed with his gang, got along with them very well. Though, he stayed in the lot more often than anywhere else. He couldn't go home, and the gang knew it. His parents were awful.
One day, Ponyboy and Johnny sat in the lot by a little fire, it was the evening, and Darry was in a decent mood. Normally Ponyboy came home without thinking, just walked off. Which this time he did, but Johnny wanted to come along. So they walked together to the Curtis household.
They knocked on the door before they entered the house, unlike the other Greasers in the friend group. Darry answered. "Bout time you came back. Hey Johnny."
"Can he stay with us for the night?" Pony asked, a gush of words that came out without him realizing. Darry gave him a thoughtful look, and a pause before answering. "Our parents would.. Yes. He has to stay on the couch though."
Johnny nodded, and smiled gently. "Thank you." He was a quiet boy, but also had a lot of personality. He was sassy, sweet, troubled, and looked up to Dally. Dallas Winston had done so many felonies in his time, since he was ten, he'd go to jail and break out. He was a trouble maker, and somehow super tough. Johnny wanted to be like that. Johnny was snapping out of his thoughts by Darry shouting from inside the house. "Are you comin' in, or no?"
Johnny nodded again and headed inside. "Yeah, sorry."The rest of the day was normal, the guys bundle of banter and chaos. They blared music, played games, went out, back and forth. Occasionally mini arguments, average conversations. Johnny got along best with Ponyboy, and they hung out a lot with Dally.
But when the day ended, he sat on the couch nervously. He was waiting for Ponyboy to come back with the spare bedding. Darry had ordered him to make the couch into a bed for Johnny. Soon, Ponyboy came back, his hands full with a couple of pillows and a blanket. Johnny stood and stepped out of the way, watching as the younger boy made the couch up for him. He felt slightly guilty and wanted to help, but every time he asked, Pony insisted that it was all right that he did it.
Within the span of minutes, Johnny lay back on the couch, his greasy head on a pillow. He thanked Ponyboy and his brothers multiple times that day for letting him in. He was still nervous, but expected the kind gesture. Like in the lot, he lay awake for a couple of hours, paranoid due to the Socs and all the jumping. But, before he knew it, he slipped off into a dreamless, yet thorough and deep sleep.
