TURNING HER FRIENDS INTO MEDIUM'S WAS SOMETHING VIOLET WAS PROUD OF. She took a risk for it, and it still, somehow, worked.
She was in the living room watching whatever Malia had put on the tv...and she was sitting backwards. The tv was upside down but she didn't care.
She played with her fingers, eyes flickering around the room. Katelyn was scrolling on her phone and the boys were nowhere in sight. She found living with them felt right. She still hadn't seen her parents, too.
Her mind went quiet for a moment, but a thought surfaced. What if they had moved on? It had been a while. Would that be better or worse than seeing them when they hadn't moved on yet?
"You're quiet," Violet's eyes met Sam's. An eyebrow was raised at her. Yeah...this was weird.
"Thinking. You should try it," she smiled sweetly.
Katelyn laughed, looking up from her phone. "Nice one."
"Thanks," she giggled. She turned back to Sam. "As I said, I was just thinking."
"About?"
"Everything."
"You've had a few months to think about everything, Vi. What's bothering you?"
She looked away. "It doesn't matter, calm down Sam."
While Violet's parents have indeed moved on, her best friend, Maddie hadn't. Maddie missed her best friend, school wasn't the same. She sat alone. The other kids didn't like her, it was just her and Violet.
Maddie walked into school that day, reaching her classroom. Violet's old locker was empty, but her name still was engraved on the front. In her handwriting. Every morning, Maddie would press her hand against it.
She entered the classroom, taking her usual seat. Her eyes lowered and she rested her chin on her arms, closing her eyes. What would Violet be doing in the afterlife?
Well, that little brunette was not in the afterlife. She was sitting next to Maddie now, grinning.
With a quick telling of where she was going, Violet had escaped the house and checked on her parents before coming to see Maddie. She looked at her best friend.
Maddie's blonde hair wasn't styled the cute ways she used too, just tossed into a ponytail. Her blue eyes were dull, and there were dark circles underneath. Her uniform looked slightly crumpled.
Violet pressed her hand against her mouth. Maddie really hadn't moved on.
She looked away, watching as the other kids made faces at her best friend.
Things were so different.
