"I'll leave you here, and you'll do your best to try and open this door. I hope you won't let me down," Daniel said with a smirk as he closed the chamber door.
"Where are we?" I asked as I stood up and used a spell to free myself from the bindings.
"We're in the Tomb of the Ancients. This was our initial destination," Lucas replied as he got up and surveyed our surroundings.
"At least Plan B worked. What's our next move? We can't just walk out of here and attack them," Anna remarked, rubbing her knuckles.
In the center of the room stood an imposing, round door adorned with numerous symbols in the corners. The walls of the chamber were covered in intricate depictions that seemed to tell a story, with these images arranged in chronological order using Roman numerals. Under each segment of the tale, symbols were etched into the walls, matching those on the door.
"I suggest we attempt to solve this puzzle and open the door before our friend Daniel returns. Then, we can set up some traps and strategize on how to deal with them," I suggested while studying the paintings on the walls.
"Francis is right, and if we're lucky, we might also accomplish our mission," Anna said, approaching the door and reaching out to touch it.
"Okay, I'll start by setting up some traps at the entrance, but we'll need to figure out how to activate them later," Lucas explained as he knelt down, conjuring invisible runes of destruction. "The trigger can be simple, like snapping your fingers to activate them."
Anna asked, "How will we know when to activate it?"
"Just snap your fingers. The sound will trigger the traps," Lucas replied, offering a solution.
The first part of the story depicted a medieval city with towering walls, and the people inside appeared as tiny dots on the illustration. The architecture was unfamiliar, unlike any culture I knew. The gates of the city were wide open and a huge crowd was pouring in.
The story continued to show the inner city, complete with breathtaking towers and temples. The people were joyfully celebrating, their clothing adorned with gold and precious gems. It was almost unbelievable that such a city could exist - it seemed more like a legend told by the locals.
The third story depicted a priest standing in front of a crowd, his arms outstretched to the sky. Behind him was a temple, a fusion of Greek and Indian styles. At the entrance stood a colossal statue, resembling a god-like figure with human form, but with two large sword-like spikes protruding from its hands, and golden tattoos adorning its body.
In the fourth segment, two celestial creatures were shown rushing toward the priest. These male and female creatures had sharp, shark-like teeth and claws. The crowd panicked before the priest, who appeared to be a mixture of god and warrior. The once-celebrating masses were now in chaos, as the priest and other supernatural creatures, such as ghouls, satyrs, and even a succubus in her true form, engaged in a fierce battle.
The story described a great conflict that left the city in ruins, its towers and temples smoldering, and the lifeless bodies of those who had tried to escape strewn across the ground. Chaos and destruction reigned.
"This seems to represent humanity's evolution and conflicts with other races," I told the others before heading for the exit.
"Did you find anything?" I asked Anna as she examined the engravings on the door.
"Yes, in the center of the door are symbols that can be activated, but it seems we only need to activate four of them to open the door," Anna replied.
In the center of the door were images of a dragon, a tree, an eagle, a wolf, a leech, a sheep, a lion, a lotus flower, a butterfly, and a book. The symbols seemed to have meaning, but determining which four to activate and in what order proved to be a challenging task.
"Is there a specific question or statement on the door that you can translate?" I asked Anna.
"I've already attempted a translation spell, but it seems to be a language not found in our books, or there's some sort of protective enchantment on the door," she replied with a sigh.
"I think there may be other rooms in this crypt with valuable information," Lucas interjected.
"Yes, probably, but considering our friend's intentions, he won't be opening this door anytime soon," Anna mused as she continued to inspect the engravings.
"Well, he did mention that he wants us to open this door. So if we suggest that we need more information to do that, maybe he'll give us permission to explore the crypt. If all goes well, he might even allow us to talk to the remaining witches," I suggested as I walked over to Lucas at the entrance.
"Now all we need is a plan to get him interested in opening that door," Anna said as she took a seat next to us.
"With our magical abilities, we'll definitely get his interest. And if we can at least delay his stay here or even imprison him, Lys and the others can use him to gather information," I replied, giving Anna a meaningful look.
We will make sure to take our revenge on him and his master for what they have done to our fellow witches and warlocks in this village.
