Summer was settling in, and the air buzzed with anticipation for the upcoming break. Melanie had spent the past few weeks focusing on herself, trying to put Skye and the hurtful memories behind her. It wasn't easy, but with Emma's unwavering support and her newfound love for journaling, she was starting to feel like herself again.

One warm afternoon, Melanie was sitting under a tree in the schoolyard, sketching in her notebook, when she heard a familiar voice.

"Hey, Melanie."

She looked up to see Lincoln standing there, his hands in his pockets, looking a bit hesitant. Her heart skipped a beat, but she quickly composed herself.

"Hey, Lincoln," she replied, trying to sound casual.

"Mind if I sit?" he asked, gesturing to the spot next to her.

"Sure," Melanie said, closing her notebook and making room for him.

They sat in a comfortable silence for a moment, watching the other students milling about.

"I've been meaning to talk to you," Lincoln began, his voice soft. "About everything that's happened."

Melanie took a deep breath, bracing herself. "Yeah, it's been a lot."

Lincoln nodded, looking down at the grass. "I know Skye's been really harsh with you. And... well, I just wanted you to know that it wasn't fair. You didn't deserve any of it."

Melanie felt a lump in her throat. "Thanks, Lincoln. It means a lot to hear you say that."

He looked up, meeting her eyes. "I also wanted to say that I really like you, Melanie. I always have. But things got complicated with Skye."

Melanie's heart pounded in her chest. She had always suspected Lincoln liked her, but hearing him say it was different. "I like you too, Lincoln," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper.

Lincoln sighed, running a hand through his hair. "The thing is, I also have feelings for Skye. We've been through a lot together, and... well, we were each other's firsts."

Melanie's eyes widened slightly, but she quickly masked her surprise. She hadn't expected Lincoln to be so open about such a personal detail.

"Wow," she said softly. "That's a lot to deal with."

"Yeah," Lincoln agreed. "And now I feel torn. Skye's been pushing me away, but I know she still cares. And then there's you, and I don't want to hurt either of you."

Melanie looked at him, her heart aching for both of them. "You have to figure out what you want, Lincoln. You can't keep being pulled in two directions. It's not fair to you, or to us."

Lincoln nodded, looking troubled. "I know. I just wish it were easier."

Melanie reached out, placing a hand on his arm. "Whatever you decide, just be honest with yourself. And with us."

Lincoln gave her a small, grateful smile. "Thanks, Melanie. That means a lot."

As he got up to leave, Melanie watched him go, feeling a strange mix of hope and sadness. She knew that whatever happened next, it was out of her control. All she could do was focus on herself and keep moving forward.

Over the next few days, Melanie threw herself into her art and writing, finding solace in her creative outlets. She spent time with Emma and her other friends, enjoying their company and trying to forget about the drama with Skye and Lincoln.

One afternoon, as she was walking home from school, her phone buzzed with a text. She glanced at the screen and saw it was from Lincoln.

Lincoln: Can we talk? I've made a decision.

Melanie's heart raced as she typed a quick reply.

Melanie: Sure. When and where?

Lincoln: Meet me at the park in an hour?

Melanie: See you there.

Melanie spent the next hour trying to keep herself calm. She knew this conversation could change everything, and she wasn't sure if she was ready for it.

When she arrived at the park, she saw Lincoln sitting on a bench, looking deep in thought. He looked up as she approached, and his expression softened.

"Hey," he said, standing up.

"Hey," she replied, sitting down beside him.

Lincoln took a deep breath. "I've been doing a lot of thinking. About Skye, and about you. And I realized that I need to be honest with both of you, and with myself."

Melanie nodded, her heart pounding in her chest. "Okay."

"I care about you, Melanie. A lot. But I also have these deep feelings for Skye. It's not something I can just ignore," he admitted, looking pained.

Melanie's heart sank, but she forced herself to stay calm. "I understand."

Lincoln looked at her, his eyes filled with sincerity. "I don't want to lead you on or hurt you. I think I need to sort things out with Skye first. If there's a chance we can make things work, I have to try."

Melanie felt a tear slip down her cheek, but she quickly wiped it away. "I get it, Lincoln. I really do. And I appreciate your honesty."

Lincoln reached out and took her hand, giving it a gentle squeeze. "You deserve someone who can give you their whole heart, and right now, I'm not that person. But I hope we can still be friends."

Melanie nodded, her heart heavy. "I hope so too."

As they sat there, hand in hand, Melanie felt a sense of closure. It wasn't the outcome she had hoped for, but it was honest. And in that honesty, she found a sliver of peace.

Walking home, Melanie felt a bittersweet mixture of sadness and relief. She knew she had to let Lincoln go, at least for now. She had to focus on her own healing and happiness.

That evening, as she wrote in her journal, Melanie reflected on everything she had been through. The pain, the jealousy, the betrayal—it had all shaped her into a stronger person. She knew she still had a lot to figure out, but she also knew she was on the right path.

Melanie closed her journal with a sense of resolve. She was ready to move forward, ready to embrace whatever the future held. And with that thought, she drifted off to sleep, feeling more at peace than she had in a long time.
