The morning sun cast a golden hue over the streets of Reseda as Eric made his way to the dojo. It was a routine he had grown accustomed to—a daily ritual of dedication and discipline. But today, fate had other plans.
As Eric approached the intersection near the dojo, his mind was focused on the day ahead. He had been looking forward to another intense training session, eager to hone his skills and push himself to new limits. But in an instant, everything changed.
The screech of tires pierced the air as a car ran a red light, hurtling towards Eric’s vehicle with terrifying speed. Instinct kicked in, and Eric swerved, narrowly avoiding a direct collision. The impact was still jarring, sending his car spinning out of control before finally coming to a halt.
For a moment, Eric sat in stunned silence, his heart racing as adrenaline surged through his veins. He checked himself for injuries, relieved to find that he was shaken but unharmed. As he attempted to calm his racing thoughts, the reality of what had just happened began to sink in.
Shaken but determined, Eric dialed his father’s number, his hands trembling slightly. Johnny answered on the second ring, concern evident in his voice.
“Dad,” Eric started, his voice trembling, “I’ve been in an accident. I’m okay, but my car…”
Johnny’s heart skipped a beat. “Are you hurt, Eric? Where are you?”
“I’m fine, just a bit shaken up. It happened near the dojo,” Eric replied, trying to steady his voice. “I’ll be there as soon as I can.”
“I’m on my way,” Johnny said firmly. “Just take a deep breath and wait for me.”
As Eric hung up the phone, he leaned back in his seat, trying to process the near-miss. Thoughts raced through his mind—what if he hadn’t swerved in time? What if the other driver had hit him head-on?
Minutes felt like hours as Eric waited for Johnny to arrive. When his father’s familiar truck pulled up beside him, Eric felt a wave of relief wash over him. Johnny rushed over, pulling Eric into a tight embrace.
“Are you alright, son?” Johnny asked, his voice thick with emotion.
Eric nodded, unable to find the words. “I’m okay, Dad. Just shaken.”
Johnny held Eric at arm’s length, his eyes searching his son’s face for any signs of injury. “Let’s get you home,” Johnny said softly. “We’ll deal with the car later.”
As they drove back to their house, the silence between them was heavy with unspoken emotions. Johnny’s mind raced with thoughts of what could have happened, while Eric struggled to shake off the lingering fear.
Back at home, Johnny insisted on checking Eric over once more, looking for any signs of injury. Finding none, he finally allowed himself to breathe a sigh of relief.
“You scared the hell out of me, Eric,” Johnny admitted, his voice rough with emotion. “I don’t know what I would do if…”
Eric interrupted, his own voice shaky but determined. “I’m okay, Dad. I promise.”
Johnny nodded, pulling Eric into another hug. “I’m glad you’re safe, son. That’s all that matters.”
As they sat together in the quiet of their living room, Johnny felt a renewed sense of gratitude for the moments they shared. Life had a way of throwing unexpected challenges their way, but through it all, their bond remained unbreakable.
Later that evening, as they prepared for bed, Johnny lingered in Eric’s doorway, his heart heavy with relief and gratitude. “I love you, Eric,” Johnny said softly. “I’m proud of the man you’re becoming.”
Eric smiled, his own heart swelling with love for his father. “I love you too, Dad. Thanks for always being there.”
As Johnny closed the door, a sense of peace settled over him. Eric was safe, and together, they would face whatever trials and tribulations life had in store.
