Weeks passed since Eric’s accident, and life settled into a new rhythm for the Lawrence family. Eric’s recovery progressed steadily, but the emotional toll weighed heavily on everyone, particularly on Ryker, who struggled to balance his own fears with the responsibilities thrust upon him.
One evening, Ryker sat alone in his room, the faint glow of his laptop screen illuminating his troubled expression. Thoughts raced through his mind, memories of the accident replaying like a relentless loop.
A soft knock on the door interrupted his thoughts, and Ryker looked up to see Johnny standing in the doorway. “Hey, Ryker. Mind if I come in?”
Ryker nodded silently, his gaze fixed on the floor as Johnny took a seat beside him. “How are you holding up?” Johnny asked gently.
Ryker shrugged, unable to meet his father’s eyes. “I’m okay. Just… worried about Eric.”
Johnny placed a reassuring hand on Ryker’s shoulder. “We all are, son. But Eric’s strong. He’s going to pull through this.”
“I hope so,” Ryker admitted quietly. “I just… I feel like I should have been there, you know? Maybe I could have stopped it from happening.”
Johnny sighed, his expression filled with empathy. “You can’t blame yourself, Ryker. Accidents happen, even in the safest of places.”
Ryker nodded, his throat tight with unspoken emotions. “I know, but…”
“But nothing,” Johnny interrupted firmly. “You’ve been there for Eric every step of the way. That’s what matters.”
Ryker met his father’s gaze, gratitude warming his heart. “Thanks, Dad.”
Johnny smiled, a flicker of pride in his eyes. “You’re a good brother, Ryker. Eric’s lucky to have you.”
Their conversation was interrupted by the sound of footsteps approaching, and they turned to see Eric standing in the doorway, his expression uncertain. “Hey,” he greeted softly.
“Eric,” Johnny said warmly, rising to his feet. “How are you feeling?”
Eric shrugged, a hint of weariness in his eyes. “Okay, I guess. Just tired.”
Ryker moved aside, making room for Eric to join them on the bed. “We were just talking,” he explained quietly.
Eric nodded, his gaze flickering between Johnny and Ryker. “About what?”
Johnny hesitated, choosing his words carefully. “About what happened, and… moving forward.”
Eric’s shoulders tensed slightly, a mixture of guilt and frustration crossing his face. “I’m sorry, guys. I didn’t mean for any of this to happen.”
Ryker reached out, resting a hand on Eric’s shoulder. “It’s not your fault, Eric. None of us saw it coming.”
“I know,” Eric admitted quietly. “But I can’t help but feel like I’ve let you down.”
Johnny shook his head, his voice firm. “You haven’t let anyone down, Eric. Accidents happen, and what’s important now is that you focus on getting better.”
Eric nodded reluctantly, a weight lifting from his shoulders as he felt the support of his family around him. “Thanks, guys.”
As they sat together in silence, a sense of unity settled over them, a reminder that their bond as a family was unbreakable. Despite the challenges they faced, they would face them together, stronger than ever before.
