‘What kind of revelry is this?’ The stranger turns to me and muses, eyes blank and vacant, but expecting. Expecting an answer that I am in no mood to give.
Or maybe I am, and I just don’t want him to despair.
I look at the scene with such bland wonder, and speak after a few minutes.
“Surely, you know already.” I intone, glancing over at him standing not far away from me. He seems to shimmer under the faint light of the moon.
‘Yes.’ he says, ‘My absence brings them such immeasurable joy.’ he finishes. He doesn’t say anything more.
We continue to stand in silence outside of his home. I accompany him for the rest of the evening.
