We park on the curb, right beside one of my least favorite places to be. The Strip. She hops out of my passenger seat while her dark hair flows in the light, warm, wind.
"This is the strip?" She scoffs.
"Nothing like LA, I know. But, it's what we've got. Let me show you where everything is." I walk ahead of her, leading the way.We get completely to the other end of the strip, before stopping beside the sweets store. Her eyes dart around the doorway at the light-up signs and stickers of different candies. "Wanna go inside?" I smile. I've never seen her so interested in something. Regardless of the most I've seen her with her nose in is horse feed in the barn.
The bell rings as we step in, and her eyes glimmer as she makes her way to the candy dispensers. I walk to the other side of the aisle, peeking over at her.
"How much is all of this?" her eyes boggle at the options.
I point to a sign diagonal of where we're standing. "Not too expensive."
She scoops spoon fulls of swedish fish, gummy bears, and jelly beans to the point that the bag almost spills. She chuckles, embarrased and closes the bag. "I think that's enough for me." We walk to the register and the cashier smiles and welcomes us, excitedly.
"Will this be all?"
"We're all set."
"That'll be $5.98"
She reaches in her pocket to pull out her card, and by the time she has it out I've already handed the cashier a $10. "Keep the change." I smile, walking to the door.We pull into the gas station parking lot, making our final run. "I'll be right back. Keep the doors locked." I urge, closing the door behind me.
Walking into the gas station, I head to the cooler, pulling a 6-pack of beer out from the back before heading to the register.
"Anything else?" The cashier chimes.
"Just some wraps." I nod at the pack Grandpa smokes.
"He won't quit, will he?" She smiles in rememberance of me coming often to restock for Grandpa.
I shake my head, "Glaucoma."
"I don't have Glaucoma, but I smoke." a voice calls from behind me.
Turning around, I spot my ex, Makayla and her best friend, Lacey standing side by side.
"I don't remember asking." I pull my cash out to pay the cashier.
"Cute girl out there, when do you plan to be done with her, next week?" Makayla sits on the countertop to face me.
"What are you talking about?" I cock my head sideways forgetting Kat was in the car.
"Why don't we head on out with you, to meet the rebound." Lacey folds her arms, watching me head for the door, passing her.
I scoff. "You two don't have anything better to do?"
"Nope. And apparently, you don't either." Makayla points at Kat, who is now staring in concern through the glass doors. "Why don't I head on out and meet her personally." She heads out of the door, bumping me as she passed by.
By the time I get out of the doors, Makayla is at the window indicating for Kat to roll the window down. I calmly climb into the driver seat, swapping looks between Kat and Makayla. I guess I'll go for it. I grab Kat's chin before pulling her in for a kiss, making direct eye contact with Makayla.
