I tried finding a spot of water as my mind stopped wandering in the memories of my past, I could still see the ghosts of those eyes looking at me with worry as I blacked out.
I lifted my right hand and turned it around to see if my mind had come back to it normal state, but as I did it, I realized I still looked at it as if I was looking through the eyes of someone else. I couldn't quite remember where the lake I had found last time was.
And so, I wandered down the path outside the cave and tried to take the same path as I had last time, I ended up walking from almost an hour, the sky had turned from a beautiful dark blue to an pitch black sky, my eyes danced across the sky as I looked at the moon.
It shined just as brightly as in my childhood memories, it had been a long time since I was able to seen it this clearly.
In the city, the windows are tainted to prevent us from looking at the full, their had been a rumor about a rampage happening every full moon a few decades ago and ever since the king had learned about it, he ordered that every window in the kingdom be tainted in a dark shade of grey that prevented us from looking outside.
He inflicted a curfew and made Daklers soldiers patrol the area of the capital. He probably chose Daklers to be sure that nobody would become a danger and lose control on the days of the full moon. My fingers drifted across the wall of rocks that covered the path as I walked upon it.
I started to enjoy the feeling of being like a stranger to my life that I was constantly feeling, it made me feel free, liberated.
I could feel the smell of salt itching my nose as I descended the rocky path, as I walked, I felt the hair on the back of my neck react, like they did every time there was a danger near me. I smelt it before I saw it, blood, spattered on the pathway as if someone had given a child a paint brush with a little bit of red paint on it and that the child had played with it.
I started following the red dots and the smell that came with it became worse and worse as I approached the end of the path, I started hearing struggling noises as if someone was trying to fight someone off.
I saw the entrance of another cavern and trying peaking inside, as I looked inside, I saw two people fighting, one with a knife, the other with nothing, the first was probably the one attacking the other one.
As I approached them subtly, I realized that the one with the knife was oddly familiar, he had a strange figure, he seemed to have a crooked arm, probably given to him by the person he was attacking.
After a few seconds of reflection, I realized who he was, he was the guy I had punched during the first day of the initiation, Krul I thinks was his name.
He was wearing a black shirt and black pants and so it made it difficult to even see a difference between him and the walls of the small cave, he was perched over another guy and as he was about to stab him, the other guy used his leg to slightly move closer do Krul and with one swift movement, he used the other leg to put pressure on Krul's leg and made him fall.
As I was about to take my knife out to interfere and prevent Krul and the other guy from killing each other, I felt a hand cover my mouth.
I was about to turn around to defend myself as I heard the person whisper "careful Ruby, you wouldn't want to hurt anyone with that would you?"
I felt disgust and rage take over me as I threw back my elbow into his stomach, what on earth was Jax doing here?! I felt his hand stop my elbow as he chuckled softly. "You can't actually be thinking about going in there while Krul is trying to kill someone can you?!".
I looked at him with anger and distrust "and why couldn't I? its not your problem if I get hurt while trying to help somebody else. unlike you, I can't stand to see some get hurt when I know I can help them."
He didn't stop holding me as he said "You're right its not actually my problem, but like I said last time, I actually appreciate you or like you whatever you want to hear. But I will not, in any scenario, let you risk your life, your potential, for some random person that you never even met."
I could feel him staring at me as he said that, but there was no way he was honest, he was a monster, just like me, except I tried to change my ways, he didn't, he embraced it and thrived in his role.
I could stop myself from saying the one thing that I knew would make him react, as it was the one thing he never talked about and the only thing he had never let the other kids joke about. He might recognize me because of that but I didn't care, I would do anything to make him stop touching me like he was right now, he was too close to nice, to unreal, he wasn't himself. I tried turning around as I spoke, but he wouldn't let me turn.
I decided to stop trying and instead said "the only reason why you think you might like me or appreciate me is because you never received any affection am I right? Your mother and your father never spared you a single glare when you were young didn't they? They were always playing with other kids, but never with you and they never once told you they liked you, did they? You try to cover the fact that you're not like them when in fact you're exactly like them aren't you?"
I could feel his body becoming more and more tense as I spoke, but he never let go, worse, he moved closer and said with anger tainting his voice "you don't know what you're talking about, and forget what I said earlier, you're not appreciable, you're a spoiled aristocrat's child that thinks that no one is better than her and that only you deserve the best."
The words he had just said cut through me as if he had thrown knifes at me, I tried to find something to respond but I couldn't, who did he think he was to tell me that I was a spoiled aristocrat's child, as I was about to utter something.
I heard a wet noise coming from the cave, I lifted my eyes only to see Krul's knife in the guy's body, Krul was once again perched over the guy, but this time a smile was covering his face, before I could see more. Jax's hand covered my eyes as he took a step back bringing me in the shadow with me.
He whispered "he's the one who's been killing the ones at camp and the ones in my team, he isolates them and kills them when they turn their back to him.
This one probably realized something was up before Krul could simply kill him by stabbing in the back."
I couldn't bring myself to react as we stayed up in the shadows, I seemed to have lost the control of my body, I couldn't talk, nor move, it was as if I had become a marble statue.
