Carter's expression softened. "I had to let you go," he said. "But I never stopped watching over you. I knew you'd find a way out."

Emily stared at him, the wind whipping around them. "But what about us?" she whispered.

He took another step closer, his hand reaching out to her. "There is no us," he said, his voice filled with regret. "Not anymore. You chose a different path."

The words hung in the air, a stark reminder of the chasm that had grown between them. "I did what I had to," she said, her voice firm. "For my family."

Carter nodded, his eyes never leaving hers. "And I respect that," he said. "But I can't let you take me down with you."

Emily's heart felt like it was being torn in two. "What do you want?" she asked, her voice barely audible.

"For you to be safe," he replied. "For you to live a life without fear."

The air grew tense as they stood there, the space between them charged with unspoken words and unresolved feelings.

And then, without warning, the sound of sirens pierced the night. The feds had found them.

Carter's eyes narrowed, and his body tensed for a fight. "You should go," he said, his voice urgent.

Emily took a deep breath, her heart racing. "What about you?"

He offered her a sad smile. "This is where I belong," he said. "With the ashes of the Black Rose."

With that, he turned and disappeared into the night, leaving her alone on the rooftop. The sirens grew louder, the lights of the approaching cars casting long shadows across the city.

Emily knew she had to move, to escape before it was too late. But as she turned to leave, she saw the USB drive lying on the ground, forgotten in the rain.

She picked it up, her mind racing. The evidence was still here, a symbol of the power she had once held. But she knew that true power didn't come from bringing others down; it came from building them up.

With a heavy heart, Emily tossed the drive into the air, watching as it arced through the night sky. It shattered against the pavement below, the pieces scattering like the shards of her former life.

As the feds swarmed the building, she slipped away, her eyes on the horizon. The city was changing, and with it, so was she. The world of the mafia was in her past now, a dark chapter she had survived.

Emily took a deep breath, the cool air filling her lungs. It was time to start anew, to find her place in the light. And maybe, just maybe, she'd find a way to forgive herself for the choices she had made.

The sun was just beginning to rise as she stepped into the dawn of a new day, her heart heavy with the weight of her past but her eyes fixed firmly on the future. The world was a delicate balance, but she had the strength to tip the scales in favour of good.

As the first rays of light kissed her skin, she whispered a promise to the man she had once loved. "I'll make it count," she said. "For both of us."
