As dawn broke, Emily knew she had the information she needed. She handed him over to the feds, watching as they cuffed him and led him away.
The next few weeks were a blur of raids and arrests. The Black Rose's empire was crumbling, piece by piece. With every capture, Emily felt a little lighter, a little freer.
But the nightmares remained, haunting her every time she closed her eyes. The faces of the men she had killed, the sounds of gunfire, the smell of burning rubber. It was a cycle she couldn't escape.
And then, one night, as she sat in her safe house, the phone rang. It was a number she hadn't seen in months.
"Carter," she murmured, her heart racing.
"You've done well, Emily," he said, his voice low and measured. "But the game isn't over yet."
Emily's grip tightened on the phone. "What do you want?"
"A meeting," he said. "Just you and me. No feds, no weapons. I have something to say."
Her heart was a tumult of emotions, but she knew she had to see this through. "Where?"
"The pier," he said. "Midnight."
The line went dead, and she was left staring into the void. The pier, where it had all begun. The place where she had first seen the man who had changed her life forever.
The night was cold and unforgiving as Emily approached the pier. The waves crashed against the wooden boards, a mournful tune that matched her mood.
As she reached the end, she saw him, his silhouette stark against the moonlit sky. "You came," he said, his voice carrying over the water.
Emily nodded, her eyes never leaving his. "What do you want?"
Carter stepped closer, his eyes searching hers. "To tell you that I'm proud of you," he said. "You've become something more than I ever could have imagined."
The words cut through her like a knife. "Is that all?" she asked, her voice tight.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a single red rose. "This is for you," he said, his voice soft. "A symbol of the love that can never die."
Emily took the rose, feeling the thorns prick her skin. "Why are you doing this?" she whispered.
"Because," he said, his eyes never leaving hers, "I know that no matter what happens tonight, I'll always be with you."
The air grew thick with tension as they stood there, the waves crashing around them. And then, with a suddenness that took her breath away, he was gone.
The pier was empty, the wind howling through the abandoned warehouses. She was alone, the rose in her hand the only proof that he had ever been there.
The feds had warned her that he might try to contact her, to draw her back in. But she knew that wasn't what this was. This was goodbye.
