Chapter Sixteen
Despite being a beautiful, smart, and talented princess, there were still things I couldn't do well.
"One more lap around the field!"
Our instructor for our sword class shouted as he strutted toward a tall tree. "The last one to arrive back will be doing forty extra chops."
The sun blazed down, making my exhaustion feel worse, but I forced myself to move. Wiping the sweat from my forehead, I slowly started running again. Panting, I spotted Sena in the lead powering passed everyone but Zilo. A few other male students who were gunning to be knights chased after them.
Lucky for me, not many of the noble girls wanted to take this class. This kept the mocking to a minimum from those who actually were taking the class.
Anyway, enough about my dreadful slog running; let's fast forward.
"Zorya, Kateri, and Hamish, you three will be doing extra chops," our instructor said from where he stood in front of us. He was a retired soldier who'd earned his title of Baron from the battleground rather than become some fancy knight in some noble castle. The cruel burn that covered half of his face had caused a few of the students to avoid his gaze. A few mocked him under their breath for his prior commoner status.
"Yes, Sir Frud." We shouted together.
Frud motioned toward the wall of wooden swords, "Grab one and partner up we'll be practicing blocking today."
I hung back allowing the others to rush forward. Instead, I opted to catch my breath and tie back my hair. Despite its short length the sensation of it brushing my neck in this hot weather made me want to act out and plot against the Dean of the school
"Here," a large hand appeared from the corner of eyes sight and gently took from me. "I'll do it for you."
I chuckled at Senas disgruntled tone. "Who knew doing a good deed would get me a man who liked doing my hair."
"Don't push it," he grumbled as he combed his fingers through my hair. " Your hands are shaking, it's faster if I do it."
I gathered my trembling hands together and smiled wider. "I don't exactly run in the sun often."
Sena snorted, "I didn't think you did."
"I think if I never stepped out of my palace by myself, I would have died in my palace," I said this out loud thoughtfully.
His hands paused.
"What is it?" I glanced behind me only to have him gently push my face forward.
"Nothing, don't look back till I'm done."
"Oh, okay, so anyway. My mom died after being accused of selling secrets to the Nycturia kingdom; my father used it to clean up his court and her. Sometimes, I wonder why he didn't do the same thing to me, but then I realized I'm his best bet if Nycturnia opens their borders again and decides to attack. Stupid really, I'm no one to them."
A flick to my forehead took me by surprise, "Owe."
