Athena woke up in the soft glow of morning light filtering through the curtains. The warmth and comfort of the bed, along with the gentle rise and fall of her daddy's breathing, made her feel safe. She turned her head slightly to see Valentino still sleeping beside her, his face peaceful and relaxed.
Curious and a little playful, Athena reached out and gently poked his arm. When he didn't stir, she poked him again, a bit more insistently this time. Still, there was no response. Not deterred, she continued poking, unaware that Valentino had actually woken up and was simply pretending to sleep.
Suddenly, Valentino's hand shot out and caught hers. Athena gasped in surprise, her eyes widening as he opened his eyes with a playful grin.
"Gotcha!" he said, holding her hand gently.
Athena giggled, trying to pull her hand away. Valentino, still smiling, began to tickle her sides. Athena's giggles turned into full-blown laughter as she squirmed and wiggled, the tickling sensation making her feel giddy.
"Daddy! S-stop!" she managed to say between giggles.
Valentino finally relented, pulling her into a gentle hug. "Good morning, my sweet Athy," he said, his voice warm and affectionate.
"G-g-good... m-m-mornin', d-d-daddy," Athena replied, snuggling into his embrace.
After a few more moments of cuddling, Valentino gently lifted her out of bed. "Let's get you ready for breakfast, okay?" he said.
They made their way to the bathroom, where Valentino helped Athena brush her teeth and wash her face. He was careful to avoid putting any pressure on her fractured rib and broken leg, making sure she was comfortable throughout the process. Athena felt a warmth in her chest, a mixture of gratitude and amazement at the kindness being shown to her.
Once she was clean and dressed, Valentino carried her to the kitchen.
The family gathered around the kitchen table for breakfast, the tantalizing aroma of pancakes, eggs, and bacon filling the air. Valentino carefully placed Athena on his lap making sure she was comfortable. Rico set a plate in front of her, filled with a small stack of pancakes, a couple of scrambled eggs, and a piece of bacon.
"Here you go, Athy. Enjoy!" Rico said with a cheerful smile.
Athena stared at the plate, her eyes wide with a mix of wonder and uncertainty. The sight of the fluffy pancakes, golden eggs, and crispy bacon was overwhelming. She had never had such a breakfast before, and she felt a bit startled, not knowing how to eat it. Her hands hesitated over the utensils, unsure of what to do.
Valentino noticed her hesitation and speaking softly, he said; "It's okay, Athy. Would you like some help?"
Athena nodded slightly, her cheeks flushing with embarrassment. "Y-yes, p-please," she whispered.
Valentino smiled reassuringly and gently guided her hands to the fork and knife. "Here, let me show you. First, you can cut the pancakes into small pieces like this," he demonstrated, carefully cutting a piece of pancake and placing it on her fork. "Now you can try it."
Athena took a deep breath and brought the fork to her mouth, tasting the pancake for the first time. Her eyes widened in delight at the sweet, fluffy taste. Encouraged by Valentino's gentle guidance, she slowly began to eat, trying the eggs and bacon with the same cautious curiosity.
The brothers watched her with warm smiles, giving her the time she needed to adjust. "How is it, Athy?" Valerio asked, his voice kind and patient.
"It's g-good," Athena said shyly, starting to feel more comfortable. "I l-l-like it."
Throughout the meal, the brothers continued to chat and joke, creating a lively and welcoming atmosphere. Athena gradually relaxed, feeling a sense of belonging and warmth she had never experienced before.
After breakfast, Valentino, who had noticed Athena's occasional glances at the storybook from the night before, suggested they have some reading time. "How about we read a little more of that fairy tale book, Athy?"
Athena's eyes lit up, but she hesitated. "O-okay," she said quietly.
They moved to the living room, where Valentino settled her onto his lap with the storybook in hand. As he read, Athena leaned against his chest, feeling safe and content.
Later, the brothers gathered to discuss something important with Athena. They wanted to introduce the concept of age regression to help her cope with her traumatic past. They explained it gently, taking turns to reassure her.
"We think it might help you feel safer and more comfortable," Giovanni said, his voice calm and understanding. "It's a way for you to relax and just be a kid again, without any worries."
Athena was apprehensive at first, unsure of what it meant. "W-what do I have to do?"
"Nothing you don't want to," Mario said. "It's all about what makes you happy and comfortable. If you want to play with toys, cuddle with your stuffed animals, or have story time, that's okay."
"We'll be here with you every step of the way," Rico added. "You're not alone, Athy."
Their reassurance and support gradually eased her fears. Athena began to understand that this was a way for her to heal, surrounded by people who loved her unconditionally. She gave a small nod, feeling a sense of relief.
"O-okay," she said softly. "I'll try."
The brothers smiled, happy that she was willing to give it a chance.
