𝐺𝑅𝑂𝑊𝐼𝑁𝐺 𝑈𝑃 𝑊𝐼𝑇𝐻𝑂𝑈𝑇 𝐴 father has always been difficult for Rosamel and Miguel. They've always thought about what it might be like, what he may be like, but they're thankful for their mother and grandmother -- they wouldn't trade them away for anything.
Miguel was raised and written by women, he's only ever been surrounded by them. His grandmother was a symbol of typical femininity with her constant cooking and cleaning, but she was in charge. No one would dare get on their abuela's bad side. Carmen, their mother, is a nurse, so Miguel has seen the most nurturing side of women while she too had escaped a loveless marriage.
Miguel's twin sister, Rosamel, however, was his biggest inspiration. With the absence of a male present in her life, Rosamel grew a desensitisation so their stupidity. Rosamel adopted incredible pride and strength in her personality. She doesn't let anyone tell her what to do, she lives her life how she wishes, and Rosamel holds an inspiring confidence. Quite honestly, Miguel's scared of her most of the time.
Rosamel has always been one to break down gender barriers since she doesn't find them necessary. A more recent example of this was her part-time job. She worked as a general mechanic in the building they live in. Whether it's fixing air conditioning, helping with renovations -- anything that needed to be fixed.
Rosamel had been sent to an apartment across the courtyard to fix an air conditioner, so she had knocked on the door. A middle-aged blonde man, who looked like he was having a rough day, answered the door with quite a sour look and an attitude, "What do you want?"
"I'm here to fix the air conditioner you were bitching to my boss about." Rosamel informed with her hands on her hips. She didn't want to go through small talk, she just wanted to do her job. The man squinted his eyes at her, suspicious. "Why?"
"'Cause it's broken, obviously." Rosamel glared at him, incredibly baffled by his obliviousness. This man clearly was not amused by her...charming personality, so he snarked, "I mean, why are you the one fixing it, Einstein?"
"'Cause it's my job to fix air conditioners and yours is broken, ergo, I'm fixing it." Rosamel spelled it out as simply as she could, even having a condescending tone as she did so.
He was confused by one word. "Ergo?"
"It's Latin, dumbass."
"Your customer service is horrible." He insulted, not wanting to be treated like this, especially when he was so exhausted this early. It wasn't even all that early, this man was simply nearing the rock bottom of his life.
Without hesitation, Rosamel retorted, "Your breath is horrible."
"Would you just fix my goddamn air conditioning?!" The man breathed out as he pinched the bridge of his nose, Rosamel being the human equivalent to a hangover. Irritating, headache-inducing, and simply won't go away. Rosamel crossed her arms in front of her chest and let out a breath as she spoke, "I'd love to, but you haven't moved your fat ass yet."
He rolled his eyes as he very obnoxiously complied by stepping to the side and letting her in. Rosamel walked inside as she took her wrench out of its loop, tossing it in her hand. An older man with a nurse was sitting on the couch had to comment as soon as he saw Rosamel, "Who's the illegal?"
Not wanting to put up with a sexist old man, Rosamel went to throw the wrench right at him, which made him flinch, but the tool never left her hand. Rosamel smiled at his fear, honestly finding it hilarious. She kept tossing her wrench in her hand as a fidget while she smiled arrogantly, walking to the back where the air conditioning was.
Johnny Lawrence didn't even know this kid's name yet, but from the very frustrating interaction to the immediate distaste and retaliation to someone insulting her, this girl was a fighter. Rosamel wouldn't let someone talk down to her, insult her, or belittle her. Rosamel's confidence and sense of self was strong, she's self aware of her flaws and her achievements, which is what makes her such a force to be reckoned with, and an annoyance.
Later in the day, Johnny had to stop by the Diaz apartment to see Miguel on account of a conversation they had earlier, but fate seemed to bring the pest that is Rosamel back into his life.
Rosamel was in the middle of doing her reps with her punching bag while her abuela was cooking dinner. There was a knock at the door. Rosamel was the one to answer it, but she immediately rolled her eyes when she saw Johnny. "Wait, you live here?"
"Wow, are you some kind of genius or something?" Rosamel snarked with an astronomical amount of sarcasm, only pushing more of Johnny's buttons. He was able to compose himself, but did need to retaliate with, "You know, sarcasm won't get you many friends."
"Says the guy who lives alone in an apartment in his sixties." Rosamel insulted, sick of simply seeing this man's face. He was incredibly mentally tiring to her since she believed his stupidity was otherworldly.
"What? I'm not sixty, I'm younger than sixty." Johnny responded with offence, which made Rosamel laugh. "Shit. Then you look horrible for your age."
Johnny sighed, wanting to move on from the bickering and speak to Miguel since that's who he was actually there for. Rosamel was simply an annoying detour. "Is Miguel here?"
"Why would you wanna see-" Rosamel suddenly cut herself off, realizing what she was about to ask and how indifferent she was about it. "Actually, I don't care. Miguel! Un anciano está aquí para verte." [Miguel, an old man is here to see you; SPANISH]
"De qué estás hablando?" [What are you talking about?; Spanish]
Miguel walked into the living room to find the familiar face of Johnny standing in the front door. His encouragement and hopes soared high as Rosamel walked back into the house and right past Miguel, commenting, "Anciano." [Old man; SPANISH]
