Dhalia is nearly vibrating in barely contained excitement while I'm mere seconds away from losing last night's dinner and this morning's breakfast.
"I've never seen so many mortals at once," she gasps in awe, her eyes scanning the cafeteria. Because my school is small, most everyone knows everyone. Our cafeteria is divided among small islands of different cliques. I've never spent enough time in the cafeteria to know where everyone gravitates, therefore I don't really know where to step and where to avoid. In this moment, I'm wishing I spent more time getting my ass beat and relentlessly teased in this very cafeteria so I could be better prepared to protect Dhalia from this barely contained chaos.
Past me wouldn't for a second have believed that I would be standing next to a drop dead gorgeous mermaid. So I snuck off school grounds and ate a sandwich on the beach. No one tended to notice when I was gone and the view was so much better.
But Dhalia said she was drawn here by the smell of "lust and angst", whatever the fuck that means.
"Uhhh...Are you sure you don't want to go to the beach? You must be missing the ocean, think about those gorgeous waves, that white sand beach–" I'm trying to paint a picture for her, trying to appeal to the mermaid side of her to avoid what will definitely be a fucking disaster.
She turns to me and squeezes the hand she's holding softly. Her hand then travels the length of my arm until she's cupping my face.
Everything around me fades into the background, the shouts and screams of teenagers have been completely silenced, and there's only her and those honey eyes looking up at me like everything is going to be okay.
And fucking hell, for a moment I almost believe it.
Almost.
"What are you afraid of, mortal?" suddenly her voice is in my head, sweet and melodic like a lullaby.
My eyes widen in shock, boring into her own and at a loss for words.
Her eyes search my own, a curious expression on her face. She must have found what she was looking for because a few moments later she pulls back with a small smile.
"Come, Dylan, show me where you go to eat."
Before I can let out a large sigh of relief, the utter bane of my existence makes himself known.
Well fuck.
Suddenly I can see everything in the room again. The cafeteria noises come back into my awareness at full force, the sudden scream of sounds grating to my ears. I fucking hate crowded places.
It's no longer just me and Dhalia in our own little bubble, but we're back in the cafeteria and standing before us is Liam Lemon.
And this motherfucker is as sour as his last name.
