The house feels strangely empty without Hardin. Despite my efforts to stay busy, I can't shake the feeling of his absence. Auden and Emery are both napping, giving me a rare moment of quiet. I sit down at the kitchen table, staring at the to-do list I've made for Auden's birthday party. Every time I cross something off, it feels like a small victory, but there's an underlying sense of melancholy knowing Hardin won't be here to celebrate with us.
I decide to tackle a new project: preparing a surprise for Hardin. I want to do something special for him when he returns. I think about what he might need—a warm welcome after these grueling days away. I start making a list of ideas: a cozy dinner, his favorite dessert, and maybe a handwritten letter expressing how much he means to us. The thought of it brings a faint smile to my face.
My phone buzzes with a text from Hardin. I open it eagerly:
"Just finished the meetings. I miss you and the kids so much. How's everything there?"
I quickly type a response:
"We're managing. Auden's fine. The house feels empty without you. I'm working on some surprises for when you get back. Can't wait to see you."
I hit send and glance around the house. It's spotless, but it lacks the vibrancy that Hardin's presence brings. I find myself missing the little things—his laugh, the way he teases me.
I'm interrupted by the sound of the front door opening. My heart leaps, thinking Hardin might have come back early. But it's just my neighbor, Mrs. Andrews, checking in. She brings over a casserole, a kind gesture that makes me feel grateful for the support of those around us.
"How are you holding up, dear?" she asks.
I smile, appreciating her concern. "We're doing alright. Just trying to keep things normal for the kids."
Mrs. Andrews nods sympathetically. "I know it's tough being on your own. If you need anything, don't hesitate to ask."
We chat for a bit, and her kindness brightens my day. Once she leaves, I return to preparing for Hardin's return. I'm determined to make this as special as possible, hoping it will make up for his time away.
As evening approaches, I check the clock—Hardin's flight should be landing soon. I prepare a warm bath for the kids and get them ready for bed. Once they're settled, I make my way to the front door, eager to welcome Hardin home. The thought of reuniting with him fills me with a mix of relief and excitement. I can't wait to hold him and see his face light up when he walks through that door.
