As you pass through the entrance to Stark Industries you hear the racket of the party which is being thrown in honour of, and by, Tony Stark. For weeks you've been tracking the movements of him and The Avengers, and this party is the perfect opportunity to settle a score with one of the guests, James Buchanan (Bucky) Barnes. The two of you met at Hydra where you were imprisoned because Hydra saw you as a threat since you knew too much. Over time you became friends and were days away from implementing the escape plan that you'd been working on together. Then, Bucky left without you and never returned.
---- Flashback ----
In the middle of the night in Hydra, the doors to the dungeon cell block slam open. Bucky is grabbed roughly out of his cell. Usually, as they escort him from the dungeons, the guards try to rile him up, but they seem in no mood to provoke him. You are restrained in your cell and sitting quietly. Ordinarily the guards pay you no attention so long as you are quiet, since you have no way to fight back, yet this night a guard comes into your cell. You hear Bucky's sharp intake of breath from the corridor, as the guard grips a hold of you.
"Don't hurt her." Bucky yells as he tries to shrug off the guards who have a firm grip on his zip tied arms.
"So, you don't want me to do this?" The guard grins, and grabs his gun out of his belt, slamming it hard on your temple. You waver, but manage to stay conscious.
"Bucky, I'm fine, don't worry about me." You reassure him, but he gets angrier as the guard raises the gun to hit you again. Bucky kicks out at the guards and they laugh, shoving him towards the door. They push you back onto your bunk and close the door before dragging Bucky away.
They usually bring him back within a few hours, but this time he doesn't return.
---- End of Flashback ----
After managing your own escape, no thanks to Bucky, you were determined to show him that you couldn't be forgotten and that he needed you.
You watch Bucky, waiting for the right moment to confront him. He steps away from his friends and heads into a dark corner, private enough not to be heard and yet still social enough to seem like part of the party, this is what you've been waiting for. You make your way through the crowd, trying to seem as though you're one of them, another partygoer enjoying the evening. As you approach, Bucky turns his head in your direction. You see he is trying to remember where he knows you from. You realise your appearance is different since your time in the prison.
"Hellooo, Bucky." You drawl as you sashay toward him.
"Do I know you?" His brow furrows as he tries to recall where he knows you from.
You smile. "Forgotten about our time together in Hydra already, Bucky? I can't believe it."
His eyes widen in surprise. "Y/n! You escaped?"
"Not exactly. It wasn't easy considering you left me there for months. I had to get. . . How do I put it, creative."
"Y/n, what did you do?" His eyes bulge in concern and worry.
"Nothing much, though you may want to go and check on your friend. Poor Mr. Stark might be feeling a little. . . off." You turn and flaunt off into the crowd, leaving him standing there gaping dumbly. You walk away, and when you've gone a sufficient distance, take a cautious look back and grin, seeing him heading towards Tony Stark. Just then, Tony collapses. All around you the guests are collapsing until only Bucky, Thor and Natasha are left standing. They gesture at the bodies, each profering a theory as to the cause. Bucky spots you and you wave, your face an expression of feigned innocence, before making your way outside and to your apartment.
A few days after the party, following a morning of running errands, you stop at a cafe and notice a black car pull up nearby. The same black car that has been following you all morning. Like all the other times, no one gets out. You've tried to see who's behind the wheel but your view of the driver has been obscured. This time, you're able to see who's in the car. It's Bucky. You sit at a table, order a coffee and a meal, and make sure he knows you'll be there for an extended period. You watch as he gets out of the car and walks into the cafe.
"Good morning, Bucky." You chirp as he ambles over to your table. "Don't worry, I took the liberty of ordering for you."
"What did you do to them, Y/n?" He growls in response.
"And here I wanted to have a lovely chat, it's a glorious morning isn't it?"
"Y/n." He warns.
"Whom are you referring to? Oh, right, your bestie Avengers, don't worry, they're just sleeping."
He groans. "I know that, but why are they sleeping?"
"People usually sleep because they're tired," your voice dripped with sass.
"Don't play games with me, Y/n."
"Fine, I slipped something into their drinks.""How do we wake them?"
"For that, you're gonna need me, but it kinda depends on how I'm feeling."
"Look, Y/n, I'm sorry for leaving you in Hydra, okay."
"Oh, you're sorry, are you? Well, that makes all the difference."
"Y/n you don't have to be like this, I said I'm sorry. Just give me some time to make it up to you."
"I've given you three months already, Bucky. Now I think it's time you learned just how it feels to be abandoned by someone you used to consider a friend. Now, I have places to be. Have a safe trip and, uh, don't follow me again, I'd hate for something to happen to you." You stand up and walk off, leaving him sitting at the table deep in thought.
