A certain stillness hung in the air.
Lith. My Lith. Was missing. In what way? I'm not one to attach and form bonds with people quickly, but Lith is someone I want in my life. If not forever then something close to it.
I thought of her tan, glowing skin, and her curly hair. She may not be related to me in any way, shape, or form. But I've come to except her as the closest thing to a mother I can get.
I thought of the way she showed me off to her parents. "This is my son," she had said. My son. Possession over me.
Not in the way my ringleader held it. Not the way Ian did either. I wasn't her's in a sense that no one else could have me. I was her's in a way that she wanted to protect me.
And where did my devotion to her lie? Now she was missing. Did Ian take her as leverage? Did she scurry on back to her father? His righthand man, whom she swore her baby to? Or was she a target of something other?
Jinx put a hand against my chest, breathing deep. It took me a moment to realize she was trying to make me follow her lead.
The ringing in my ears faded as I gazed into her silver eyes. Trying to reconstruct a future where I didn't have Lith. Panic seized my heart when I couldn't imagine any other place I'd want to be than with her.
My mother. Even if I've only known her for a few weeks.
"Breath Crow," she muttered, "breath easy."
I put the phone back to my ear, "what do you mean?"
"She's missing. Gone Luca. Dad said she left last night when she checked on you and realized you weren't there. Hasn't been back since. And she's not answering her phone. We all tried, even Sophia."
My fault.
It's my fault she's gone.
I swallowed thickly, my chest burning with the weight of unshed emotions. With the guilt of what I'd done.
My jaw clenched as I thought of who was truly to blame.
Ian.
"So what's the plan?" I grit out.
Silence met my question.
"Jericho-"
"I don't know, Luca!" He snapped, sighing with urgency, "dad locked himself in his bedroom, Zeke is being reckless- as always- and Christophen won't stop crying. I swear I've never seen this kid so helpless."
"Are you going to pick us up?"
"No."
"Okay." I hung up the phone, handing the item back to Blair. I didn't answer any questions, I didn't slow my pace as I trudged to the exit.
