Two letters. This was all Jungkook had left behind as a farewell. William knew he couldn't read them without me; we were bound together in this tragedy.

I opened the first one, written a few weeks ago when everything was still going well.

Dear William, Dear Rose,

I've spent years protecting and saving others, but never my own. William, you are the only member of my family I can trust. I haven't been the ideal cousin, but for your friendship with Rose, give her this letter. I refuse to let her live in a lie any longer. She fell for it once, not twice. The consequences will be awful for one of us, and I'd rather be the victim. The whole investigation and the discoveries are my initiative, so if I have to pay the price, I'll do it for both of you. Forgive me cousin, forgive me Rose, for what I have done and would do. I have the choice to act or play dumb, and I chose action. I can't do anything directly, but the elements and evidence are in the phone hidden in my safe, the one in my dressing room. William, only you know the code; remember the day I left the police academy. Hurry up, because if the evidence disappears, all the risks I'm taking will be for nothing. I don't know how many people want to shut me up, but there are too many, and this is no time to die. If anything should happen to me, don't worry. Especially you, William; you'll have a great legacy. My death will reveal the greatest betrayal of the century. Even Judas will be jealous.

Forever with you,

Jeon Jungkook.

Short but clear. He died so I could no longer live trapped in a lie, but which one? There were hundreds of possibilities. The guilt grew even stronger as I realized I'd misjudged him. The whole macho, mean, and insufferable persona was a cover, so that somehow I would end up alone with him and hear what he had to say.

William's hand trembled as he handed me the second letter. This one was written in a less cheerful context, as Jungkook was threatened by his killer. It was the last thing he did before breathing his last.

Dear cousin,

If you are reading this, it means I've been silenced for knowing too much. I'll be forever young anywhere but in heaven; it's my time to die. I should've known when I became a policeman that it would be the beginning of the end. Don't be sad. Think of me as much as you want, and tell yourself that I'm watching over you, like the big brother you've always wanted. I can't write what I want, but I hope Rose knows everything. Tell her I'm sorry a thousand times, and if any of you feel guilty, I beg you to stop. Don't look for the bastard who did this to me, or he'll make your life a living hell. Just stay in your place and live like I'm still here; this is my last wish. This isn't the right time to tell you this, but it's the last opportunity. Take everything I own because it's yours now. You're like my little brother Willy, and I want you to have memories of me, even if it's only material.

You know what's funny? My killer letting me write one last letter. Nice for someone who stabbed me. Anyway, keep in mind that the weapon always ends up turning against you. You have the choice of getting killed with it or becoming the villain of your own story. I'll let you guess what I did. I will never regret it; the karma will take care of the culprits. I trust this bitch dressed in red with my life. I love you.

My last farewell,

Jeon Jungkook.

"I was never on his side..."

William's sob of pain broke my heart in a way I couldn't explain. I still refused to cry, if Jungkook saw me he would think I was an ungrateful brat, who ignored his sacrifices.

He died thinking I'd discovered out the truth. I didn't, but I wasn't going to stay in denial : the first step was to help William and the second was to find out what was the secret that concerned me.

"We go back to the penthouse. The safe is probably still there." I put the letters back in their envelopes.

"We can't and you know it."

"Crime scene or not your cousin didn't die for nothing. So let's go."

The killer had won a battle, but not the war I was about to start.
