"Alright, that's the end of practice. Hit the showers!" Coach Hernandez hollered, his voice booming throughout the field. Wearing his blue Holloway cap, he blew on the whistle, signaling us to go home.
Hearing that made me collapse onto the field. I was sore, hours of training on the field taking a toll on my body. I was breathing heavily, letting the sun hit me. My shirt was sweaty and all I wanted to do was just lay there on the ground until it swallowed me whole.
Unfortunately my peace was short lasted as Cam hovered over me, which ended up blocking the sun. He was just as worn out as me with sweat going down his dark skin and his arms were crossed. "Now usually this is my thing, you're stealing my mojo, Caleb."
"Jesus, Cam." I groaned. "Who the hell says mojo?"
"Obviously, I do." Cam extended a hand, which I took.
"Where's Elliot?"
"He's going over some notes with Coach," he answered. "Was it just me or were Coach and Elliot extra hard on us today?"
"Nope, I noticed."
We had an upcoming soccer game on Saturday against Brooksville. They hadn't always been our biggest opponent when it comes to soccer, but we noticed that their techniques had gotten better. Out of all of the games they played, they won every single one. It was about to be October, but Coach wanted to be extra prepared.
Elliot, being the captain, was analyzing every single one of their games with Coach Hernandez. He made sure to point out their flaws and was just as hard on us as Coach was.
That meant going through hours of torture, but so long as we won this game, then it would be worth it.
I hope.
Cam and I walked into school and went straight to the locker room, trailing after our teammates. Half of the guys were in the showers, while the other half were hitting each other with their shirts–the usual.
I separated from Cam and managed to get to my locker without getting attacked from any of the guys. I swung my towel over my shoulder and was about to hit the showers until I heard my name. I turn around and saw that Julian Flores was standing right in front of me with an awkward look on his face.
"Could you help me with defense?" Julian asked meekly. He had just gotten out of the shower as his hair was damp and he was wearing a fresh new set of clothes. Julian's a scrawny kid that just joined the JV team this year and he's not too bad for a freshman. He plays center back, which is my position on the varsity team.
"No problem, kid. You could come over to my house sometime this week if it's alright with your mom."
"Really?" Excitement took over Julian's features as his eyes lit up at my response.
I nodded. "We're neighbors so might as well."
"Alright, I'll see you tomorrow, Caleb. Thanks!"
I chuckled seeing the kid walk away with a grin on his face. I've gone over to Julian's house a couple times growing up for dinner and each time, he reminded me of myself more and more.
