My chest tightened and I felt a lump swell in my throat. I couldn't tear my eyes away from the scene in front of me. I stood paralyzed, stuck between the urge to scream or cry. My vision blurred at the edges and my limbs felt, like they were crushed by the sight of seeing Lucas and Penelope together so intimately.
Penelope and Lucas.
Lucas and Penelope.
It suddenly makes sense— the rushing out of the cafeteria, the intense gazes and their clumsy attempts to be discreet with one another. What other signs had I missed?
Penelope's horrified shriek filled the room as she scrambled to cover herself with the blankets. Her red hair was in an unruly mess and her lipstick was smudged. Her body was still entangled with Lucas, who was rushing to get out of the bed.
"Listen, Acacia, it's not what it looks like." Lucas stammered, his face full of panic as he fumbled around with his pants.
I snorted at his disheveled appearance. "Of course, I totally didn't see you screwing around with my best friend." I shot a scathing look at Penelope, with my jaw clenched and my eyes narrowed.
She flinched under my gaze as she sunk further into the bed. She, at least, looked humiliated.
"Come on, Acacia, we barely did anything tonight-"
"Tonight?" I interrupted, crossing my arms together in disbelief. "Are you fucking kidding me, Lucas?"
Lucas recoiled from the clear disgust and menace in my tone. He then pointed at me, accusingly, "You're worried about me? I should be asking you about him." He gestured at Caleb, who stood awkwardly at the door.
Truthfully, I completely forgot he was there. Caleb furrowed his eyebrows and frowned. "Listen, man, I have nothing to do with this shit. I didn't even know her name until 10 minutes ago."
"Cut the crap, Caleb, everything I had, you have to have-"
"What the hell are you talking about, Whitlock-"
"Caleb, just go." I tell him, making both boys stare at me.
He raised his eyebrows. "Are you sure?"
I nodded my head and Caleb hesitantly walked out of the room, leaving me with Lucas and Penelope.
"You don't get to deflect and try to push the idea of cheating onto me. You're the one who cheated, you're the one fucking around with Penelope." I shake my head. I was growing even more infuriated by the minute. "Fucking Penelope." I muttered. "Do you have anything to say for yourself?"
Penelope shamefully looked down at her hands. She simply bit her lip and didn't dare to look me in the eye.
"Unbelievable." I roll my eyes, my anger boiling over. "You're both disgusting."
