Butterflies flutter over the great green lawn. The giant squid breaks through the last glaze of ice on the Black Lake. The Whomping Willow shakes the water from its branches... The dying sun streams through high windows, painting Ada's face a fierce amber red as she stands opposite Lupin.
Ancient charts drape the walls while gleaming spheres of sun glass orbit one another silently. Lupin paces before a large trunk. "You're sure about this, Ada? This is very advanced magic. Well beyond Ordinary Wizarding Level." Lupin tells Ada in a soft voice.
"If Black can fight the Dementors, I need to know how too." Lupin studies Ada as if conflicted, then decides. "Very well. The spell I'm going to teach you is called the Patronus Charm. Ever hear of it Ada shakes her head."
"You're hot as a professor. I'd love to bent over your desk." Sirius whispers into Remus' ear causing the man to blush, unaware of Ada's traumatized face who heard the whole thing.
"A Patronus is a kind of positive force. For the wizard who can conjure one, the Patronus works something like a shield. The Dementor feeds on it instead of them." Remus explains. Just then, the trunk rattles violently. As Ada's eyes wander, Lupin snaps his fingers, brings her attention back. "But in order for it to work, you must think of a memory. And not just any. This memory needs to be a very happy one. And powerful." The brunette thinks a bit. Then... nods
"Got something? Good. Let it fill you up. Lose yourself in it. Then speak the incantation: Expecto Patronum. Without your wand..."
"Expecto Patronum..."
"Right then. Shall we?" Ada nods, raises her wand. Lupin, watching closely, reaches over, grips the lid of the trunk. "Concentrate, Ada. Concentrate..." As Lupin flings open the case, Ada opens her eyes. In the sun's blood light, the Dementor looks particularly horrific.
Ada calls out "Expecto... Patronum..." The torches on the wall flicker as a chill breeze fills the chamber. A scream echoes distantly. Ada's hand trembles. Her eyes begin to roll up... "Expecto... Expecto..."
"Bloody hate demetors." Ada grumbles with a pout on her face, Mattheo just wraps his arm around her waist pulling her in giving her a kiss on her forehead causing her nose to scrunch up and look up at him. The girl just smiles and sticks out her togue at the boy with a giggle a he looks at her with all the love in the world.
Crack! The Dementor mutates into a silvery white orb "Riddikulus!" Lupin flicks his wand, sends the orb back into the packing case. Ada slowly stands blinking, dazed. Lupin fishes a chocolate frog from his pocket.
"Do you always have chocolate in your pockets?" Ron asks the older man with amusement. "Don't ask stupid questions Ron of course he does, It's Remmy. You have met him before." Ada laughs at her friend.
"Don't be mean Addy." Harmonie scolds. Ada just raises and eyebrow and whispers in her ear. "Coming to your boyfriends defense are we?" She teases. The girl turns bright red confusing Ron. "He's not my boyfriend." Monie whispers back firmly. Ada just laughs "Yet."
"Oi what are you whispering about?" The ginger boy asks looking curios. Hermione snaps her head towards the boy with wide eyes squeaking out "Nothing!" as Ada laughs leaning back into her boyfriends side.
Ron turns to Mattheo with a confused look "Do you know?"
"Nah mate, you know women and their gossip." Remus and Sirius take a sharp breath knowing the boy had fucked up, James had once said the same thing about Lily and Marlene and that didn't end well for him. Ada slowly moves away from the boy and looks at him with a slight glare, tilting her head to the side. "What the fuck is that supposed to mean?" Mattheo eyes widen slightly knowing he messed up.
"Nothing love I don't know what I'm talking about." He sputters out a quick reply. "Hmm." Ada says before leaning back as Mattheo lets out a small breath.
Passing it into Ada's trembling hand. Ada studies the frog. Takes a bite. Beginning to recover. "That's one nasty Dementor." The girl says with a shaky breath. "Boggart, Ada. The real thing would be much, much worse. Just out of interest, what were you thinking of? What memory did you choose?"
"The first time I rode a broom." Remus shakes his head "That's not good enough, Ada. Not nearly." Ada glances toward the window, at the bloody sun. She tries to think of a good enough memory but they all blend into the same happiness as when she first rode a broom. The girl didn't have very many happy memories till the past three years and the only people she could thank for that was her friends.
"Awe that's so sappy." Sirius teases with a small smile, oh how he wishes she had loads more happy memories then just the ones she's received at Hogwarts, though he's glad for Ron, Hermione and Mattheo he wishes that she had ones with James and Lily. Good happy childhood memories.
"There's another. It's not happy exactly. I mean, it is. It's the happiest I've ever felt. But it's... complicated." Ada says looking down.
"Is it strong?" Ada looks up into Lupin's eyes. Emotional. Nods. "Then let's try it." Ada takes a breath. Tosses the frog aside.
Remus gasps watching the chocolate getting tosses like it was nothing. "I'll get you some more dad." Ada sighs looking at the mans sad face turn into a smile. "He needs to go to chocolate rehab." she mutters to Sirius causing the man to chuckle with a nod.
"Think, Ada, think." Remus encourages Ada "Just do it! "Lupin blinks at Ada's quiet fierceness. Opening the packing case. Instantly, the Dementor appears again. Achill fills the air. The hair skates off Ada's scar. She clenches her jaw... "Expecto Patronum!" She calls hands shaking turning into full body trembles.
But she holds her ground, when a huge silver glow bursts from the end of her wand, hovering between her and the Dementor. The Dementor falters... Ada's legs like jelly... "Riddikulus!" Crack! The Dementor vanishes. The girls arm drops. Remus eyes Ada with a kind of awe. His voice barely a whisper "Well done."
"Remmy, I think I've had enough. For today." Lupin nods hearings the exhaustion in her voice. Watching the small girl move to the door. "So you know, Ada: You'd have given your father a run for his money. And, believe me, that's saying something."
Ada ponders this. Then speaks, deep inside herself. "I was thinking of him. And Mum. Seeing their faces. They're just talking to me. Just... talking. That was the memory I chose. I don't even know if it's real..." She grips the door, pushes past. "But it's the best I have."
Remus turns towards his daughter with a large smile. "You know cub, I was so proud of you that day." The girl looks up to her father with her big eyes, "Really?"
"Of course, I'm always proud of you."
