All the girl were asleep apart from one, Ada was laying one arm wrapped around her deer, wolf and dog teddys while the other was holding a barley visible picture of her parents due to the flickering light of the candle flame. Her eyes foggy as she delicately traces the edges of the photo, sometimes she questions how she could miss two people that she never really knew, her heart aches for parental love something she's never got to experience. As she stares deeply at the photo the candle flame starts to die down before it all turns to black.
A windowpane rattles, up high, the corridor thatched in shadow. Creeping forward. A shadow engulfs Sir Cadogan, dozing against his tree..
"Aaaahhhh!" Ron screams bloody murder waking up practically every dorm room. The boys in the dorm room bolt up and sees a silhouette etched on the window --a man clutching a knife . Screaming. Amid the chaos, Neville grabs his wand. "Everybody out!" The others flee. Neville faces the hulking shadow, wand poised. Neville shouts trying to as brave as passible yet the tremble in his voice is quite evident "Show yourself." Crash! The glass of water shatters on the floor and Scabbers darts past Neville's bare feet, chased by Crookshanks. Seizing the moment, the silhouette grasps the curtains and swings through the open window, plunging into the night. Neville rushes to the window, the silhouette leaps from ledge to ledge with an animal's grace, then... vanishes.
Neville sweeps Ron's curtains aside. His bed is... empty. "Ron! Ron!" Neville's eyes flash toward the window, when... Ron pokes his head out from under the bed. "Is he gone?"
"You were very brave Nev." Luna says in with her dreamy voice that could sing someone to sleep. A bunch of students voice their agreement causing the boy to blush bashfully with a grin tugging at his lips.
Not many people thing he's brave despite being in Gryffindor house, he has heard people from his house call him cowardly and a disappointment to the Gryffindor name. Sometimes he thought the hat was wrong and he should have been placed in Hufflepuff. Yet hearing everyone say he was brave it gave him some confidence, something the boy lacks. Though the boy does remember that it was his fault Sirius got in the common room in the first place.
Remus then spoke up with a soft smile, "It was very brave Mr Longbottom, you are just like your father was at that age, he might not of seemed like he was brave but he would always protect his friends. You have both Franks and Alice's best qualities." Neville gives the man a watery smile, it was nice to hear about his parents from someone who wasn't his gran.
Sirius has a slight grimace on his face his past actions are not really helping to prove his innocence, he sheepishly pats Ron's shoulder "Sorry mate I didn't mean to scare you like that, but you know, I was just going for the rat."
The entire Gryffindor House, in pajamas, stand before McGonagall, who wears a tartan robe and an expression of singular irritation. "That's preposterous, Weasley. How could Sirius Black possibly have got through the portrait hole?" Professor McGonagall asks completely fed up and just wants to go back to bed.
"I don't know how he got in! I was a bit busy dodging his knife!" Just then, a curiously content Crookshanks wends his way through Ron's legs. "And this bloody cat ate my rat!"
"That's a lie!" Hermione cries out scooping up Crookshanks into her arms petting him "It is not and you bloody well know it!" Ron argues, face red with anger.
McGonagall's face tightens "Silence!" Sometimes she doesn't know how Ada puts up with the twos constant bickering.
"I don't know how I do either Minnie." Ada says with a dramatic sigh. "HEY!" the two shout in union before glaring at each other. "Anyway nothings as bad as listening to you and Mattheo flirt twenty four -seven, it's nauseating." Ron claps back causing the couple to roll their eyes.
"Amen!" Sirius shouts in agreement.
McGonagall turns then and everyone follows her eye to Sir Cadogan who, sensing the attention, perks up instantly. "Sir Cadogan. Is it possible that you let a mysterious man enter Gryffindor Tower tonight?"
"Certainly, good lady! He had the password. Had the whole week's, in fact. On a little piece of paper."
"Which abysmally foolish person wrote down the passwords and then proceeded to lose them!" Every eye shifts once more: Neville. McGonagall sighs. "Is it always going to be you, Longbottom?"
The boy shamefully looks down " I'm afraid so, ma'am."
"While we know Sirius Black is gone tonight, I think you can safely assume he will, at some future time, attempt to return. Let me be clear. You are not to move about the castle alone. And you are not to write down the password! Understood!" A collective nod of the head. McGonagall gives the ties of her robe a sharp tug, collects herself, and exits. "Very well then. Go to bed." As the students drift off, Ron casts a last angry glance toward Hermione, who now holds Crookshanks in her arms.
The trio start making their way through the common room towards their dorms. "I find it astonishing that someone who prides herself on being so logical can be in such denial." Ron carries on his argument with Hermione.
"Ada. Will you explain to your friend Ronald that he has absolutely no proof whatsoever that my sweet, unassuming cat ate his shabby, decidedly decrepit rat."
"Ada knows the truth of your horrible cat. Go on, Ada, tell her."
"You two never stop do you?" Mattheo says with a smirk as Ada rolls her eyes. " We don't argue all the time." Hermione tells the boy with an uncertain look on her face. The boy just scoffs a laugh, "Yeah just seventy percent of the time."
"That's generous, more like ninety." Ada tells her boyfriend who nods.
Ada snaps "No, I won't. Know why? Because I don't care about your stupid rat! I don't care about your stupid cat! I've got few other things on my mind right now!" She's to stressed to care about their petty fight that has been going on all year. Ron scoffs "Really? Wasn't you had to rollunder the bed last night to avoid getting cut to ribbons! A person could die being your friend, Ada!" Ron stops, wishes he could take it back. They all wish he could. Avoiding each other's eyes, they turn, continue on to bed.
Mattheo glares at the boy, how dare he say something like that to his girl. "I really didn't mean it Ada, it was just in the heat of the moment, I was angry and scared." The ginger boy spits out to his best friend. Ada just gives him a small smile "It's okay Ron, promise." The boy smiles glad his best friend didn't take it to heart.
Deep down she knew he was right, her parents died because she was born, Cedric died because of her. Ada's scared to watch the future movies just to see how many people die because she was in their lives. Mattheo sees the distant look in her eyes, one he's grown use to seeing but hating it every time, he silently grabs her hand and kisses the side of her head just to show he will always be there for her.
