Rose Pov:

I lay in my new bedroom, the soft hum of crickets outside my window lulling me into a state of drowsiness. The moonlight filtered through the sheer curtains, casting ghostly shadows on the walls. It had been a long day, filled with unpacking and settling into this unfamiliar house. My dad and brothers had been kind, but I couldn't shake the feeling of unease around them. They were strangers to me, and trust was something I wasn't ready to give.

Dinner had been a quiet affair. I picked at my food, my mind racing with thoughts of my old life and the friends I left behind. My dad tried to make conversation, but the words felt forced, like we were both trying too hard. My brothers were no different. Their smiles seemed genuine, but there was something in their eyes that made me wary.

After dinner, I decided I needed some fresh air. The walls of the house felt like they were closing in on me, and I needed space to think. I slipped on my shoes and quietly crept out the front door, careful not to wake anyone. The cool night air hit my face, and I took a deep breath, feeling a sense of freedom wash over me.

I walked aimlessly, my thoughts a jumble of confusion and doubt. The quiet streets of the neighborhood were empty, and I felt a strange sense of peace. As I turned a corner, I saw a little boy standing on the opposite side of the street. He couldn't have been more than six years old, his small frame dwarfed by the shadows of the trees.

He looked lost, his eyes wide with fear. I glanced up the street and my heart stopped. A car was speeding towards him, its headlights slicing through the darkness. Without thinking, I sprinted across the street, my feet pounding against the pavement.

"Hey! Watch out!" I screamed, but the boy didn't move. There was no time to think, only to act. I reached him just as the car was upon us, scooping him up in my arms and diving out of the way. The car's horn blared, a deafening sound that echoed in my ears as it sped past us, narrowly missing us by inches.

We tumbled to the ground, my heart racing and my breath coming in ragged gasps. I held the boy tightly, shielding him from any further danger. The driver didn't stop, didn't even slow down. They just kept going, oblivious to the near-tragedy they had almost caused.

I looked down at the boy in my arms, his face streaked with tears. He clung to me, his small hands gripping my shirt tightly. I tried to calm my racing heart, but the adrenaline was still pumping through my veins.

"Are you okay?" I asked, my voice trembling. He nodded, his eyes still wide with fear. I hugged him tightly, feeling a strange sense of protectiveness wash over me.

As I stood up, holding the boy in my arms, I couldn't help but wonder who he was and why he was out here alone. And more importantly, what had just happened. My mind raced with questions, but there was no time for answers. Not yet.

We needed to get to safety, and I needed to figure out what to do next. I glanced around, trying to get my bearings. The night was still and silent, the only sound the distant hum of the car's engine as it disappeared into the night.

I took a deep breath, my mind made up. I would get the boy home, and then I would find out what was really going on. But for now, all I could do was hold him close and keep moving forward, one step at a time.
