Lunch

"Are you kidding?" Marshal asked the young canteen boy, he was just a year or two younger then the him.

"Nope sorry, we just ran out of tater tots." The kid responded, in a way he felt sad for Marshal, I mean tater tots were one of the schools best cafeteria food, but tragically, he just gave the last few.

"Aww! Okay thanks anyways, have fun Rubble!" Marshal said, everyone knew Rubble, he was the small kid who worked at the school over lunches for some extra cash.

Marshal walked defeated to the doors, the group had wanted to eat outside and decided they'd go to the empty basketball court.

"Marsh! She's evil! Help me." Chase said as Skye ran after him with some stick she must of found off the ground.

"What's the matter, you aren't usually this scared of me with a stick? Are you afraid of women or something?" Marshal teased, going in front of Chase to block Skye.

"I'm not afraid of anything! But that stick...there's moss on it, I hate the texture of moss." Chase said cowering behind Marshal.

"Well I'm not wasting my lunch on that, just go find another stick with something Skye hates." Marshal said getting out of Skye's way, having the other boy shriek and start running away, only to be chased again.

Marshal went to go sit with the rest of the group, Rocky and Zuma still seemed to be talking to each other, this time Zuma lied on Rocky's shoulder. Everest seemed to be eating everything on her plate, everything but a small container of Tater Tots.

"What are those?" Marshal asked, already knowing.

"These? Tater Tots, want some?" Everest asked.

"Wait you're offering them to me, why?" Marshal started grabbing the snacks.

"Yeah, I woke up late and accidentally grabbed the bag I packed for my dad instead of my own, and my dad loves tater tots, I hate them." Everest responded.

"What how come?" Marshal said rather loud, shock in his tone. "Tater Tots are my one and only true love, a snack that surpass time and space!"

"Meh I don't get the appeal, they taste gross."

"Olive theory." Zuma said, getting a light jab by Rocky before the two of them continued their conversation.

"Excuse me? If it doesn't bother you, why are you sitting here with us instead of with your team?" Everest asked, she didn't mean to sound rude, but she had a tonal problem.

"Well Rocky is here, and if he's here, why shouldn't I be?" Zuma answered chip and smiling, Rocky wasn't so pleased, he found Everest's question rude, but he didn't want to mess up his so far so small friendship with the others.

"Really? May I assume you too are close?" Skye asked, having over heard and going to sit down with the rest of the group, her stick no longer in sight, Chase not far behind. Skye seemed to be worn out while Chase still looked fine, he was a better runner with a longer endurance.

"Yeah, we're childhood friends." Rocky answered. "Closer than we are too anyone else actually..."

"That's so cool, I think we need more bros! Especially in high school with all the relationship drama, it's wonderful to have a brother." Marshal said to which Chase nodded.

"Really? I think they are closer than just friends." Everest said.

"Well duh, best friends!" Skye answered, making Everest realize how dense and stupid the people around her were.

Everest tried defending her point a bit more, arguing without flat out saying what she thought, and the three kept responding with things that concerned Everest more and more. Both Zuma and Rocky looked at each other while this was happening. "Best friends, before everything..." They both muttered avoiding each other's gazes, if the rest of the squad weren't arguing, they'd notice the glances being shared.

"I give up..." Everest sighed, finishing her lunch. Marshal had eaten through the tater tots and was almost done his sandwich, no crust. Rocky had passed half his sandwich to Zuma and Zuma shared his bag of chips, some orange triangles in a bright red bag. Skye sat down and started eating her lunch, a plastic container of sushi. Chase grabbed a cup of water and chugged half of it before putting it away and laying his head.

"Are you not hungry?" Skye asked Chase, to which he just shrugged and said no.

"Hey where is everyone? Shouldn't the basketball team be outside playing?" Rocky asked.

"Oh no sport teams start playing until the second week because of the equipment being made available the second week." Zuma answered.

"So by next week we need to find a new spot?" Rocky asked.

"Exactly, or just sit here and deal with basketballs being thrown and maybe even getting hit." Zuma said.

"Where should we sit?" Skye asked.

"What about the library?" Rocky suggested. "There are rooms in the library that you can do stuff like eat and it has glass so people can't see in."

"Woah that sounds sweet, so that's a plan? We meet over there next lunch?" Skye asked, to which everyone agreed.

The rest of lunch they spent chatting, Zuma stayed on Rocky's shoulder, Chase and Skye seemed to grow closer, and nothing happened with Marshal and Everest, they're still rivals.
