Draco kept his expression indifferent and almost bored, but inside he was buzzing. There was an infestation of doxies in his system because his stomach felt slightly nauseous and the possibilities were flitting through his mind with remarkable speed. Someone like him becoming the next Headmaster? He could prove that Slytherins weren't only Dark wizards and those that had fought on the wrong side of the War had the capacity to change.

Brilliant.

He could help so many people.

The only issue?

He noticed Granger's posture straighten. Her brown eyes glittering like a niffler who'd stumbled upon a chest full of shiny objects. She wanted to be Headmaster too. Determination steeled in his gaze and she must have felt his eyes on her because she looked at him. His determination mirrored in hers. The swot outperformed him at almost every subject when they were in school, but she wouldn't beat him this time.

Not on his fucking life.

"I apologize sincerely about the break in today's schedule, but I have to admit that something has come up in my family which requires me to depart Hogwarts." The Headmaster said mournfully, sliding her gaze to meet each of the Professors, "Because of this, there will need to be a new Headmaster. I understand that this is a very important decision and for that reason, I'll stay until the Yule Ball this winter. At the ball, the new Headmaster of Hogwarts School and Witchcraft will be announced. Each of you will be considered for the position under the scrutiny of the Minister, the Chief Warlock, and the Director for Wizarding Education. Everyone will be ranked based on their loyalty to the school, capability to lead, and the most important factor; their character. The new Headmaster will be charged with leading the next generation of students to greatness. You're all raising the next Minister, the next Chief Warlock, and the next leading educators of the world. It is not a decision that will be made lightly." She let out a ragged sigh, "I shouldn't have to say this, but any behavior not in line with Hogwarts' moral principles will not be tolerated. Any instances of bribery or coercion will result in immediate dismissal from the school in every capacity. Are there any questions?"

Hermione's brow furrowed, wondering what had come about in Minerva's family that she had to rush halfway through the school year and give up her beloved position as Headmaster. Could she not have someone temporarily hold the position? Was she leaving for good? The woman was private and Hermione didn't think it was in her place to pry.

Still... Headmaster.

Headmaster Hermione Granger.

She could see it now as her posture straightened. The school wouldn't change all at once, but she'd restructure the curriculum. More inclusive and allow for witches and wizards of all backgrounds to feel welcomed here.

Feeling a gaze on her, Hermione turned to meet Malfoy's gaze. To the untrained eye, he looked indifferent. Uninterested. Bored. But she'd known him a long time.

Draco Malfoy was determined. Competitive. And an arsehole. She steeled her gaze and knew that he was interested in the Headmaster position. Probably just to irritate her. He usually got the last word in their squabbles, but not this time.

He wouldn't beat her this time. Not on her fucking life.

She left the room first, not wanting to deal with Malfoy's glower. He was in a foul mood, worse than usual. Hermione could understand his anger for the students being placed in harm's way and she talked to Hagrid earnestly about investing in a more secure stable. The school's funds could be allocated there if she put together a presentation detailing where-
