"I miss you," you say sadly on the phone to your husband. Dylan left for two months (on and off) to shoot for the new film he's in and he wasn't due back for a few more weeks.
It was agonizing.
"I miss you too babe," he replies.
"How are the kids?"
"They're good. They miss you a lot though. They want their daddy home."
"I know, I hate being away from them for so long. It makes me feel like an awful father."
"Dylan, you are not an awful father. You put your career on the line each time you turn down a role. You make sure you only take a few roles-which you make sure you are passionate about-so you don't have to be away all the time. The kids are getting older and soon enough they'll be able to understand that. But they already know how much you love them and how much you hate being away from them. Believe me, they know."
"Thanks Y/N."
"Anytime," you smile.
"So what are your plans for the rest of the day?"
"The kids had been sort of bummed lately so I thought I'd keep them home and they could veg out and watch movies of their daddy."
"What about going to an amusement park?" he offers.
"I don't know, that'd be so complicated for me to do by myself so spur of the moment."
"Well what if you weren't by yourself?"
"Who else could I-" you're cut off by the sound of the doorbell going off. "Hold on someone's at the door."
You go over to open the door and you are surprised to find Dylan. Suitcase and flowers in hand.
"Dylan!" you squeal, dropping your phone and jumping into his arms, practically knocking him over.
"God I missed you," he says, lifting you up.
"Daddy!" you hear with the pitter-patter of little toddler feet running towards you.
He sets you down and gets close to the ground, arms outstretched. Your two little ones run into his open arms where he promptly picks them up.
"Oh my god, you guys are so big...and heavy!" he acts like he's about to fall over and drop them, causing enormous giggles to arise from the kids.
"Daddy we missed you!" your little girl says.
"I missed you too," he replies with a peck on her cheek. "And my man! You keepin' the house down?" he asks, focusing his attention on the other child in his arms.
Your son responds with a big, goofy grin (which he undoubtedly inherited from his father) and an enthusiastic nod of his head.
"Good," he says, putting the kids down. "Now...you two wouldn't be interested in going to an amusement park or anything would you?"
"I wanna go! I wanna go!" the kids yell, jumping up and down.
"Oh really?"
"Yes!" they shout.
"Okay we're going to all have to help mommy get ready. Okay?"
For the next hour, you're in super-mommy mode getting everyone and everything ready and out the door into the car. As you load the last few things into the car, Dylan buckles the kids in.
The two of you get in and Dylan drives off to the amusement park.
The rest of the day was a blast.
The kids soaked up all their father's attention and were thrilled with all the rides. Granted, most of the time was spent on the carousel, but they enjoyed every minute of it.
Dylan would catch you every now and then with a smile on your face just gazing at him with the kids. The first time he caught you, he thought something was wrong and asked you what was going on.
"Nothing," you responded, "I'm just so happy you're here and with the kids. I'm just so happy right now."
From then on, every time he caught you in what looked like a daydream, he'd just lean over and give you a peck on the lips and tell you that he loves you.
