Animated from scratch

The scene where the Three Cabs sing their song was animated from scratch by Ward Kimball.

He wasn't given any storyboards to work with for the song sequence. 

Walt actually told him to animate it from scratch without any storyboards. 

So Ward mustered all of his brain power and came up with the animation you see today, working with only the song's lyrics.

He showed the animation to Walt, afraid he'd get fired, but Walt loved the animation and told him not to change anything.
