You never know what's going on inside a person

A constant, eternal battle
A clash of mind and heart.
It's cheesy but true,
Never judge a book by its cover.

"You don't look like this, you don't seem like that,"
Never fitting societal norms,
Never pretty enough,
Never skinny enough,
Never tall enough,
Hair never right,
Smile too wide,
Too excited about nothing,

Someone I look up to once said,
"I don't think you should ever have to apologize for your excitement"
That woman has so much power and influence,
Why won't they listen?
Why won't people stand up to those standards?

Why?
It's not fair
It's never fair
Life doesn't change for us

We are given by society what we must become
If we don't fit that, we are outcast
Thrown out like a first draft
Crumpled up

We can stretch ourselves out again
Cover the crumples with thick layers of makeup,
But we have to remove it eventually
Face ourselves
Face our truths,
And what we know we really are
