For the next two days, the girls talked constantly on the phone.

Sometimes they texted each other and sometimes they called each other.

Yesterday, Danielle visited Haerin after her new vision test and she brought a board game. It was very easy to play. They just had to create words with different kinds of pictures. It was really fun.

They shared the same humor and it was really easy to talk beside Danielle. They understood each other really well.

Today Haerin didn't have any test. She had a free day all to herself. The girl didn't have to think about what to spend her time with. She was already on her way to Danielle's room.

Haerin grew pretty close to this girl for a short amount of time. Danielle was making her feel emotions she never felt before. Like safety.

As she got closer to her room everything around got louder. The doctors, the phones and the beeping sound from the medical machines.

Haerin's attention was suddenly drawn away from her discomfort by the sound of footsteps rushing past her. She looked up to see Ms. Park running down the hallway, followed closely by several doctors.

Concern stirred within her as she watched them rush into one of the rooms. Something was clearly wrong.

This was the hallway to Danielle's room. She got worried really quickly when she realized that.

She walked to the room where the doctors ran in. Peeking in, Haerin caught a glimpse of the commotion inside.

Ms. Park and the doctors were huddled around the bed, their faces stern and worried. Haerin couldn't see who it was from where she stood, but she could hear the beeping of a heart monitor, its pace was quick and erratic.

Haerin looked up to see the door's number.

B56

As if the life had been drained from her, she felt herself getting dizzy. Looking back in the room she noticed the familiar decorations hanging on the wall.

As Haerin's view through the door shifted slightly, she finally caught a quick glimpse of Danielle on the bed.

Her heart stopped.

Seeing the girl laid out, surrounded by medical personnel, was like a punch to the gut. She looked pale and lifeless, her usual spark of energy completely absent.

Haerin felt a surge of panic wash over her. The scene in front of her was unlike anything she had ever seen.

Her breath came in short, quick gasps as she stood frozen in place, her mind racing with a hundred questions and worst-case scenarios.

Her heart pounded in her ears, drowning out the sounds of the hospital around her.

She wanted to barge into the room, to get answers, to do something, anything. But fear and uncertainty kept her glued to the spot.

"Dani-" she breathed out.

Haerin's whisper was interrupted as Ms. Park, looking up from the bed, noticed her by the doorway. The woman's expression hardened for a moment when she saw Haerin, a mix of surprise and concern etched on her face.

"Get out!" She ordered hard.

Haerin was taken back by the sharpness in Ms. Park's voice.

She stumbled back from the door, her eyes wide and filled with confusion and worry.

"Danielle," She whispered again.

As the door slammed shut in front of her, Haerin managed to catch one last glimpse of the girl lying still on the bed. The image burned into her mind.
