I walked into Mr. Denick's room. Mackenzie was sitting in the desk closest to the teacher. Nobody else was in there. I really hope it wasn't just us.I sat down closest to the door and farthest away from her. I pulled out my phone. I completely forgot I needed someone to drive me home. I texted Dylan.
"Hey are you available in an hour? I kind of need you."
He texted back right away.
"Yeah I can come pick you up from detention in an hour."
"How did you know I was in detention?"
"Haven't you heard? You're the best gossip around. I don't even know what you did I just know everyone's talking about you."
"Oh great, just don't forget to pick me up."
"I won't. Love ya babe."
"Love you too."
I set my phone down on the desk. I pulled out my homework and started working on it. Mr. Denick walked in.
"Hello ladies."
"Hi Mr. Denick." Mackenzie blurted out.
I looked down back at my paper. I used my hair to block the two of them out. My head was tilted and I was bending over.
I was working on impossible math homework. I was factoring problems. I don't understand the point of this. How am I going to use this in my life? I took a break from my math homework and pulled out my science study guide.
I started skimming through my notes so I could fill in the answers. I finished my study guide and I had 20 minutes left of detention.
I glanced over at Mackenzie and she was reading. She looked over at me.
"What are you looking at?" she glared at me.
I just turned away without saying anything. I sat there and stared at the clock. I could have pulled out my algebra homework but I was not in the mood to stress out.
The longer I looked at the clock the longer the minutes seemed. The day is just a collection of hours. Hours were going by where I could be doing something better with my life.
There was a sudden stillness like the gap between ticks on a clock, but the next tick never coming. We progress a step farther, in each tick of the clock. But there were no ticks. Time felt still like nothing was moving. I wasn't progressing on anything.
I was just still. Nothing to do, nothing to say. I stood up and walked to Mr. Denick's desk.
"Can I go use the bathroom?" I questioned him looking at the ground.
"Pass is by the door."
I walked to the door and picked up the pass swinging it around my finger as I walked out of the room. I walked down the hall to the bathrooms at the very end. The hallways were silent like ghosts. It was as empty as a pool in the winter time.
I stepped into the bathroom and looked at myself in the mirror. I looked fine. At this point I didn't care about my appearance. I looked up at the clock. I've been out for two minutes.
I turned the water on and washed my sweaty palms.
When I got back to the classroom Mackenzie was leaning against Mr. Denick's desk. She was talking and smiling. She was such a whore. Her body language said it all.
I hung the pass back up and sat down. I started to pack my stuff up. There was five minutes left of detention. I just needed to get out now.
I sat and stared at the clock. I felt like I was in high school musical when the clock was ticking really loudly and they were chanting summer over and over again.
