You and Toby lagged behind Jack, his long strides causing the two of you to jog every now and then. But instead of trying to keep up with him, you and Toby agreed to stay back and let him lead. It was a silent understanding, one that you both mutually agreed to without having to say anything.
The thought of keeping up with Jack's long strides was simply too exhausting.
You saw this as an opportunity to ask Toby a question, thinking that he seemed to be an honest person...well maybe too honest.
"Toby?" you said, turning to the boy who walked next to you.
"That's my name," he responded, with his usual manic smile on his face. His head then twitched to the side before turning back toward you.
Just like before, the wound on his cheek caught your eye, but you quickly shook it off and decided to continue. You couldn't afford to be distracted by something so inconsequential.
"Could you tell me why you...disemboweled those people?" you asked, trying to phrase your words carefully.
He looked at you with a bemused expression, as if wondering why you would even bother asking such a question. But then he seemed to think about something, before leaning in closer.
"Why not?" he finally said, with a grin.
You down looked at the plethora of coloured leaves covering the ground, feeling their crunch under your feet as you both followed Jack. Toby seemed to notice your gaze, and then kicked a small pile of them as he walked.
"ive done maybe a hundred, they get easier every time you know," he blurted out.
You pressed your lips in a line and sighed a little.Toby seemed to notice your reaction, you could feel his eyes burning into the side of your skull.
"How haven't you been caught?" you asked, and he responded with an nonchalant shrug.
"I hide out in here, there's some random abandoned houses and cabins I stay in," Toby continued, walking alongside you.
"Some nights I'm feeling Durham, some nights I'm feeling Carmel, those pigs are too lazy to chase up cases, never mind look through forests," he said, smirking to himself.
He twitched again, it looked uncomfortable, although his face continued to remain devoid of pain, only small curses escaped his lips, as if his mind was elsewhere.
This sudden and frequent twitching didn't confused you as you understood it could be Tourette's. What was confusing you was when his face continued to show no signs of pain through even the most painful looking joint cracking.
"Why do you want to know everything?" Toby whispered, with his voice so close to your ear that you could feel his breath on your neck, making you shiver and snap out of the concerned thoughts you were having.
He laughed, and then suddenly swung his arm over your shoulder. You felt a rush of discomfort as his arm brushed across your shoulder.
"Is it cause you wanna write about me in your shitty news article?" Toby suddenly laughed, his smile growing even wider.
"Twitchy bastard murders hundreds?" he squeezed you close to his side.
"You wanna be a little saviour don't you? Every one of those pricks deserved it don't you worry" he said, looking down at you and making you feel extremely uncomfortable.
You ignored him, not wanting to play his game anymore. Instead, you kept your eyes fixated on the ground, and he soon grew bored of taunting you.
"You're fucked up Toby," you mumbled after awhile, and you were surprised to see a slight look of annoyance on his face and his arm slid off your shoulder.
