Alara sprinted through the dark forest, heart hammering with a blend of fear and hope. Twisted branches clawed at her like skeletal hands, their gnarled fingers scraping against her skin. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and decay, each breath filling her lungs with a chilling cold. Shadows danced and twisted around her, morphing into grotesque shapes that seemed to come alive, reaching out to ensnare her in their dark embrace. She stumbled over protruding roots and jagged rocks, her breaths coming in ragged gasps as she pushed herself to keep moving forward. She had to find Blake.

"Blake!" she screamed, her voice a desperate echo among the trees. "Where are you?" The forest abruptly opened into a clearing, bathed in an eerie, ghostly light. There, standing in the center, was Blake. Relief flooded her, and she sprinted towards him. He looked up, his eyes meeting hers, and for a moment, she felt like everything was going to be okay.

But as she got closer, Blake's expression changed. A cruel smile twisted his lips, and he began to laugh—a cold, mocking sound that sent chills down her spine. Around him, shadowy figures emerged, joining in his laughter. She recognized them: Carmy, Ryan, Selene. Their faces were distorted, twisted in malicious glee. They all laughed at her, their voices blending into a nightmarish chorus that echoed in her mind.

"Blake, no!" Alara cried, reaching out for him. But as her hand touched his, he turned into a shadow, slipping through her fingers like smoke. The laughter grew louder, and the shadows closed in around her, suffocating her with their derision.

"You're nothing, Alara," Blake's voice echoed, now dark and twisted. "You'll always be alone."

Alara screamed, the sound ripping through the darkness, her voice raw with terror and despair.

She startled awake, her own screams echoing in the quiet of her room. Her heart pounded in her chest, and she could feel the cold sweat clinging to her skin. She looked around, disoriented, and tried to calm her racing heart. It was just a dream, she told herself. Just a nightmare. But the fear and the sense of loss lingered.

Carmy burst into the room, her face twisted in annoyance, eyes flashing with frustration. "Again, Alara? Really? Do you have to wake us up every single night?" Her voice was sharp, cutting through the lingering haze of Alara's nightmare. The harshness in Carmy's tone was like a slap, jarring Alara further awake and making her heart race even faster. The hurt in Alara's eyes was met with no sympathy, only a cold, dismissive glare from Carmy.

Alara felt a lump in her throat, her words caught somewhere between her heart and her mouth. "I'm sorry, Carmy. I really am. I just—"

"Just what? Need more pity?" Carmy interrupted, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "You're exaggerating, Alara. Just stop it already."

Alara stood there, at a loss for words. She never expected Carmy to be so harsh, to accuse her of seeking pity. The words cut deep, leaving a wound that was invisible but just as painful. Alara felt like she had been punched in the gut. Is that really what people think of me? Her mind flashed back to the countless sleepless nights, the terror of her nightmares. She felt the weight of her loneliness pressing down on her, making it hard to breathe.

Later that day, Alara talked to Zach about Blake after he returned from visiting him. She hoped for some solace in hearing about Blake's progress. 'How is he?' she asked, her voice filled with longing and a hint of desperation.

Zach sighed, his expression softening as he closed his book and looked up at her. "He's getting better," he said, a genuine smile spreading across his face. "He's even started joking about missing school, which he never thought he'd do." Zach's eyes twinkled as he continued, "And he's especially eager to see you. He talks about you all the time, Alara." His words were like a balm to her aching heart, and she couldn't help the blush that crept up her cheeks.
