"Amelia," Keri sings as she greets me in the school hallway.
"Keri," I reply in the same tone.
Somehow, we've using that greeting for the past five years and haven't gotten tired of it. The funny thing is that it didn't come from anything. She just used it randomly one day to greet me and it became our thing ever since. She gives me a quick hug and we pull away.
"How was your weekend?" She asks.
"It was alright. Mick took us to a baseball game."
She makes a face.
"She's still with him?"
"Looks like it. Anyway, she made a big deal out of us showing him some respect so we accepted his invitation to the game."
"What game?" Eric asks as he joins us.
"Hey babe," Keri says with a smile.
"Hey yourself," he repeats.
She gives him a quick kiss. He faces me.
"Hey, Amelia."
"Eric," I say.
"What game did you go see?" He asks.
"Mick took me and Jaiden to a baseball game on Saturday. I wasn't really paying attention to be honest."
"I don't blame you. I wouldn't want to go to a game with that asshole either."
I look at him with confusion.
"How do you know that he's an asshole?" I ask.
"I can tell from all the stories."
"Oh. Yeah," I say with an eye roll.
We continue to hang out until it's time to head to class. The day passes by pretty slowly. During lunch, we sit with our other friends Desiree, Adam, and Heather. Adam is in the middle of telling a story when we join them at the table.
"What's up?" I ask.
"Adam was just telling us about this guy that he met yesterday," Heather explains.
"Oh yeah?" Keri asks eagerly.
"Yeah. Jackson and I were sharing some wings. I saw him walk in and went to talk to him. His name is Alec and he's a junior at Madison."
"Did you get his number?" Desiree asks.
"I didn't get the chance."
"Why not?" Keri and I ask simultaneously.
"He had to leave."
"Well, hopefully you'll see him again," Heather says.
"Yeah. He goes to Madison so he's close at least," I say.
"Yeah exactly," Keri agrees.
Adam smiles. I look at Heather and Desiree.
"How about you? Do you have any exciting news about boys?" I ask.
"Mmm mmm," Heather says as she shakes her head.
Desiree smiles a little.
"Actually," she begins.
"Spill," Keri encourages.
As Desiree launches into her story about finding an old crush's social media, I take occasional glances at Eric. I notice that he isn't very into any of this and start to wonder why. I decide to just let it go. If something is bothering him, he'll probably tell Keri.
