In May, it's prom season. While everyone else goes to the actual prom, we hold our own prom in Keri's backyard. Mom and Margaret both want to take like a thousand pictures of me and Keri in our prom dresses. They finally let us leave once they're completely satisfied with the photo collection. Mary drives us to the house and leads us inside. The living room and the backyard are both decorated beautifully for the occasion; there are balloons, twinkling lights, and a banner that says prom night in cursive writing.
Our friends arrive at around the same time. They all have someone that they could invite but tonight is just for us. We help ourselves to the food that's set up in the kitchen and head outside to eat. It's nice to just have fun with my friends. That is, until we start talking about our plans for the future.
"I got accepted into SDSU," Heather announces.
"That's great," Keri says.
"Are you going to go there?" I ask.
"I think I am. It sounds like it's a nice campus and I want to see California," Heather says.
"We can go together. I'm going to UC Berkeley," Adam says.
"Awesome. It'll be even more fun to go with a friend."
"You know it."
"Great. You'll be in Cali and I'll be off in Michigan for nursing school," Desiree says.
"We'll visit when we can."
"No. I'll be the one to visit you to get away from the cold."
We laugh even though we know that she isn't joking.
"I think you already know what we're doing," I say.
"No. It was just an idea at the time," Heather says.
"Well, it's decided. I'm going to school here and Keri's going to Florida."
"Are you going to be okay with the long distance?"
"Yes of course. We'll all keep in touch when we can," Keri says.
"Of course," Adam agrees.
"Yeah we will," Desiree says.
We look at each other silently as if to savor the moment. Although we plan to keep this promise, we know that these changes are happening soon enough. We move on to lighter topics and enjoy the rest of our prom night. After everyone leaves, I stay for a little while. Keri and I hang out in her room and cuddle on the bed.
"I kind of wish we hadn't talked about college. It reminded me about how much I'm going to miss you," she says.
"I'm going to miss you too but let's not think about it. We still have some time before all of that happens. We have right now."
"You're right. I think we should make the most of it."
"I'm okay with that."
She kisses me passionately and pulls my dress over my head. I help her with her zipper. Needless to say, we proceed to get more physical from there. Although it isn't our first time, somehow it feels even more special considering the circumstances. The first time was still very special; it happened randomly one day but we knew we were ready for it. I liked that it happened naturally instead of remembering it because of a special occasion.
We cuddle for a while before we put our dresses back on. It always feels good to hold her like this.
"You know I love you, right?" She asks.
"Of course I do."
"That's never going to change."
"I know, baby. I'm always going to love you too."
"That's good because I'm not going anywhere. At least, not emotionally."
"Neither am I."
She kisses the top of my head which makes me smile. We decide to finally get dressed and Mom picks me up shortly afterwards. Keri walks me out.
"Thanks for coming over. This is much better than the actual prom," she says.
"Of course. I agree with you."
She kisses me sweetly.
"Good night, baby," she says.
"Good night."
I approach the car and get into the passenger seat. We wave at each other and I watch her go inside with a smile on her face. When I go to sleep, I have a big smile on my face as well.
