When the she-cats were brought back into the house they were once again reminded of the other cats that resided there. Their scent flowed throughout every crevice and clung to every stair that led down to the mouse-infested basement.
And because they had not expected it, the apprentices were astonished when the Twoleg dumped them from their cage and gently onto the carpeted floor.
No more Twoleg box-traps! Oh thank you Starclan, because it's been DAYS!
The floors, too, were full of golden-brown cat hair. But first Crescentpaw immediately looked towards the way out.
Ugh. Of course the only exit is closed.
Through that glass-paned door she could see the light to outside. Every other natural light source was covered with a heavy blanket or black-flowered curtain, shrouding the room in a harsh yellow glow. The ill-placed ceiling lights above were no help, either- stinging her eyes and giving them an eery experience of artificial lighting.
Her gaze moved along the edges and corners of the ceilings and then the baseboards. Nothing...
"Sister."
Crescentpaw took a moment longer to search, but when she finally turned she locked eyes with a strange cat that had appeared from far across the room. Tinypaw was faced towards them, stilled into a defensive crouch against the muted lavender carpet.
"Who are you? Why haven't you said hello before this, kittypet?" Crescentpaw liked the ring of confidence in Tinypaw's voice, but even she was a little unsure. She had never met a kittypet before. Did they really not mind other cats on their territory? In their nests?
The cat's dark outline moved from beneath a wooden table. She padded fluidly and sleek like a she-cat would. There was a feminine curve to her muzzle as well, but also a large sloping forehead that resembled that of an adolescent's.
As she moved even closer Crescentpaw nearly gasped at her uniquely marked pelt.
Now, she knew that hers was a bit distinctive on its own- with the white crescent mark on her face, and blue-black tabby swirls along her flanks and haunches. But this she-cat was practically dipped in gold; and then spotted with dappled brown leaf-shade.
"Hi!" The young cat mewed in a high-pitched, enthusiastic voice. "I didn't approach you yet because Caracal said it was rude when you were so new here and already nervous and stuck in the cat-trap. So I waited until you got back from the vet." She halted a few paces away, but her blotchy tail-tip was flipping with excitement.
"I just wanted to come and ask your names and if you like it here or not. But also I wanted to ask other things before you went back to your Colony because usually the other cats don't come back after their vet appointments so I always miss my chance to ask them abou-"
"Oh. Uhh-..." Crescentpaw lifted a paw uncertainly, interrupting the she-cat before even more questions could be piled upon them. "What are you even talking about? We have no idea about half of what you're saying!"
"Oh, uh? What?" The kittypet looked confused, as if she hadn't just confused Crescentpaw with her rambling as well.
"Oh, wow!" The she-cat broke off with a gasp. "And you're my age, too! Well, sort of. It seems like it, I think. Are you?" Her golden-yellow eyes, just a few shades lighter than her pelt, were round with eagerness.
What a one-track mind Crescentpaw thought, but didn't say it out loud.
"We're probably a bit older." Tinypaw was about the same size as the spotted kittypet, as she pointed a claw back and forth between them forlornly. She had abandoned her defensive crouch and was sitting with her tail around her paws. Crescentpaw did the same, then leaned forward to groom her fluffy white chest-fur.
"And I'm Tinypaw and she's Crescentpaw."
"Your eyes are so cool, Crescentpaw! But those are weird names." Cheetah looked Tinypaw up and down, as if expecting her paws to be abnormally tiny.
Crescentpaw blinked, then further responded; "We're from Riverclan, so our names are like that. What's a vet?""
The spotted she-cat rolled her eyes towards the ceiling as she explained, as if bored. "They always ask that!" With her head thrown back she groaned, her spiky white teeth flashing. "It's a whitecoat's building with people that heal you, or give you pokey-spiky jabs to keep you from getting sick in the future. After she takes you to the vet-place the old lady brings you back to where she found you."
Of course neither she-cat answered for a few moments; and apparently the kittypet took that as her opportunity to ask another question.
"But what's a Riverclan? I've never heard the colony cats talk about that place before. Is it another part of their territory?" The kittypet's long whiskers twitched as she spoke.
"It's... uh. Well, I don't think so. But we don't know what a colony cat is."
The young she-cat was quick to answer, which Crescentpaw just assumed was one of her quirks at this point. She found herself smiling at the little cat, though.
It's odd. Usually I'd be super annoyed at someone talking this much. But she's.... Interesting somehow. The soft carpet cushioned the she-cat's haunches as they sat in a circle facing each other.
"The colony cats said that their group is a collection of families living behind the tallest part of the city," the spotted cat recited. "But if you aren't them, then I've got to know more about the place that you come from!"
______________
The spotted KittypetIf you didn't know, Bengal cats are a domesticated breed of hybrid cats that were crossed between domestic cats and the wild Asian Leopard Cat, which is a wildcat species native to (you guessed it) Southeast Asia. Bengal cats are larger than domesticated cats and are known for being athletic with a slender but muscular build. They are usually difficult to maintain inside of inactive homes where they don't have enough exercise, play space interaction or attention.
