Darkness. It felt so cold. So so cold and lonely. I never thought about what the afterlife would feel like, but I now know that it feels...
Sad.
Nothing to look at, nothing to grab at, nothing to listen to, nothing to taste, nothing to smell.
I guess it wasn't actually darkness because even darkness was something. But this was the true absence of something. It wasn't even a place. It was an existence of nothing, and I was there. My thoughts were the only something in this void of nothing.
My thoughts?
My thoughts. I could hear them. I could hear myself thinking, I could feel myself thinking.
My eyes blinked, nothing was visible. But I was seeing, even if it was the black abyss in front of me. I moved my hands, gathering my ability to feel. I could feel a hard surface under my hands. Moving my hands across the surface, I could feel other items on it.
I flinched as something became visible in front of me a small way away. Something blue. Somethings, I mean as in there were now three blue glowing circles observing me.
"Oh, hello." A voice spoke out from the direction of the blue spheres, but they seemed unblinking as they stared. The eyes didn't seem to belong to a human. That much was clear to me as they watched me wave a hand towards the direction of the eyes. Before I could ask anything the voice spoke again.
"You died."
Oh.
"What a shame, we haven't met before but hopefully you'll be able to stay alive long enough next time for me to give myself a proper introduction." What did they mean next time? I died. That should have been the end of the story.
WHAT DO YOU MEAN NEXT TIME???
I tried to voice my concern but my words stayed in my mind. It's like they stayed as a written draft and never got posted.
"Since those idiots up there didn't feel like telling you about which exact dangers you'd face down here, I've been asked to fill that role." I glared at the glowing eyes as I tried to voice my anger and concerns through my eyes. But the voice never responded to my heated stare as they continued to speak.
"Whenever you die, you'll be brought here and I'll show you a document detailing what caused your...'
"Oh"
"So"
"Early demise." Their words seemed to really pronounce the word 'early' rubbing in the fact that I died on the first door. The first of probably hundreds, but I wouldn't know...
BECAUSE I DIED! And it will stay that way, with me DEAD!
"He was very specific with how much information I could share with you though." And now there's a HE? I couldn't wrap my head around the situation as the voice didn't stop talking, the voice kept on shoving me with this new information that I couldn't make sense of.
"I know it's stupid, his orders, not mine. All the documents are heavily classified, full of black lines, [REDACTED] text, the whole nine yards." Oh great, I get to look at a paper detailing what killed me but I don't even get to know all the information.
"The more times you die to something, the more black lines he lets me remove." The more times I WHAT?!
This can't be true. This has to be a sick joke in purgatory. Dying over and over again sounds like hell. I don't want to die again. I only needed the one time and that was all I'll ever need.
My hands move on their own as I grab at my hair. I was dead, no. I am dead. Even the voice said I died. I'm dead. Right?
Even in my crisis the voice still speaks.
