It's always the damn bright lights that wake me; why can't I be left alone to sleep peacefully in the dark?
I could feel the lights above me try to dig itself under my eyelids to force me out of blissful sleep, but I was persistent to stay oblivious, so I turned my head away from the light. The air smelt sterilized and cleaned like a hospital. I kept breathing in the smell, and sooner than later the smell stuck to my nose until I was familiar with the scent until I couldn't smell it anymore. The air quality wasn't as good as it was before I went to sleep, I know that much, as it hurts to breathe in and out now compared to the moments when I was walking in the room full of the vine people.
The lights above me buzzed annoyingly above me, and the sound was harder to deal with, unlike the sight that I easily fixed by looking away, so I now inwardly groaned as I turned my whole body to the side. It muffled the noise in one ear but didn't get rid of or muffle the sound for the ear that was uncovered. Slowly my brain processed the fact that I was awake, and I soon acknowledged my surroundings with my different senses.
I cracked open my eyes to see that I was in a familiar room, the infirmary. No wonder the sterilized smell was somewhat familiar to me. I looked at whatever I could from where I laid, my sight was tilted as my head was laid onto the soft pillow that came with the bed.
"You know, you don't have to be here, okay?" A voice spoke from behind me, so I didn't know if they were talking to me or maybe they could be talking to someone else in the room. Not knowing what to do, I stayed silent and still on the bed. I hoped they weren't trying to talk to me, as I was now becoming aware of a raging headache in my head.
Even though I was focused on the new pain that I was now aware of, I could hear the sound of shifting feet somewhere else within the room; the sound wasn't in the same area as the voice, so I assumed that there was indeed a third person in the room with me. I was uncomfortable with the fact I had two people watching over me as I slept.
The second didn't respond though to the first voice, but there were quiet sounds of movement and skin moving against skin in a fast manner.
"They're in a stable condition. No physical harm. You are looking at them yourself, they're fine." The first person spoke again even though the other person in the room didn't verbally respond to them.
In response to what the first person said, the second thumped their heavy boots onto the floor in a way of protest and sighed softly. They stomped their foot down in the same manner a rabbit would if agitated by something. There then was prolonged silence before the sound of moving skin began and stopped in a quick amount of time.
I bit the inside of my cheek as there was another moment of silence in the room. I couldn't see the two other people who occupy the room, but I could feel the tension between them grow in the room. The tension was so thick it made me nervous from just existing in the same room as the tension.
The silence was broken again, but with not the sound of speaking or the soft sound of skin moving against each other. It was the sound of a lighter being flicked on. The person with the lighter had to flick it a few times before they got it to light whatever they wanted to light off.
"Really? You're smoking right now? In the infirmary with a patient inside?" The voice asked the other person in the room, but was once again met with silence. There was another heavy stomp that echoed through the quiet room, with the smell of smoke that now wafted through the once stale smelling room in a suffocating way.
"You finally broke that 5-year streak of not smoking, for what? Because you're stressed over an Expendable that doesn't die? Think about it, General! They can't die. They don't need you watching over them. I'm here for that reason, to watch over them." They spoke with annoyance evident in their tone as they mimicked the second person's actions and stomped their foot onto the ground.
