"Bluebell! Wake up!" hissed Bramble, lightly tapping his elder brother's shoulder. Bluebell opened his tired eyes and stifled a yawn. "Oh! Good morning, Bramble."
"I-It isn't morning yet, Bluebell..." said Bramble, sheepishly. He looked down in shame. Bluebell sat up, slowly. "If it isn't morning, why do you wake me?" he asked.
"B-Because...I had a...nightmare..." Bramble's amber eyes filled with tears and he pulled Flopsy a little closer to him. "Oh dear. Don't cry, Bramble, it's all alright." assured Bluebell, with great sympathy. He hated to see his little brother cry. It gave him a strange feeling, deep in his heart. He could not describe it, but he knew it was not a good feeling. "I-I was going to ask..." sobbed Bramble, through floods of tears, "If I could...come into your bed to sleep...I-I'm sorry for waking you...!"
"Bramble, it's okay. Don't worry. I'm not angry. Of course you can, come here." Bluebell pulled Bramble into an embrace and held his head close to his chest, so that he could hear his heartbeat. Ever since Bramble was born, he had always been calmed by the sound of Bluebell's heart. Sometimes it was the only way that he would sleep as a baby. Bluebell did not mind. It kept him calm too. "What happened in your nightmare?" asked Bluebell softly. "I...fell into the River Thames..."
"Oh my! Don't worry, I'd never let that happen to you. Neither would Mother or Mama." Eventually, Bramble (and Bluebell) both fell asleep again.☆ ☆ ☆
When Smokey came into Bramble's room in the morning, she was distressed to find that he was no longer there. She hastily came into Bluebell's room, and breathed a sigh of relief. She smiled to see them both fast asleep in Bluebell's bed. "Rose, darling! You must come and see!" she said, in a loud whisper. When Rose came, she laughed quietly. "Ah. It looks as if someone had a nightmare. I suppose Bramble didn't want to wake us up again. Bluebell doesn't seem to mind." She put her arm around her wife and sighed happily. "I suppose we do have to wake them up though, don't we?" said Smokey.
"I believe they can have a little more time. After all, they were both woken up in the middle of the night." Rose answered. They slowly and cautiously closed the door so as not to make a noise and wake them, then went downstairs to have their breakfast. "I wonder what his nightmare was about." said Rose.
"I won't waste my time guessing. Last time, it was that he 'ate poisoned sweets and got very ill indeed' as he told me. I really haven't a clue what goes on in that boy's head!" Smokey laughed.
"No, me neither. Lessons at school, perhaps?"
"It could be. Although the time before that it was that he felt so shy that he fainted, and didn't wake up for 3 days. I'm not sure they would teach him that in school. In fact, I'm not sure shyness fainting fits actually exist. Has he ever had any good dreams?" asked Smokey.
"He told me he had one about Flopsy becoming a real rabbit, with floral print stomach and ears just like her. He woke up expecting to find a rabbit in his bed, but of course, there wasn't." Just then, Bluebell came in, carrying a very sleepy Bramble. "Good morning." he said.
"Good morning, darling." replied Rose.
"I can't get him to wake up, Mother. He won't let me, so I had to pick him up." laughed Bluebell.
"Mmmnggh..." Bramble moaned.
"Come on, Bramble. It's breakfast time! You want breakfast, don't you?" said Bluebell, in Brambles ear. Bramble shuffled in Bluebell's arms. "See what I mean?" Bluebell put Bramble in a chair and clapped in front of his face. "Oh!" cried Bramble. "Good morning...h-how did I get here? One minute I was in bed and now-"
"I had to carry you, sleepyhead! You wouldn't wake up!" Bramble blushed.
"Oh..."
"Bramble had a nightmare about falling into the River Thames." said Bluebell.
"Bramble, dear, how do you have these dreams?" asked Rose.
"I'm not sure..." said Bramble, hugging Flopsy.
"Breakfast time please, I'm famished..." said Bluebell.
