the sound of the air conditioner powering on filled in the silence of the l/n residence. it was a little late at night, around ten, to be exact. y/n was sitting at the dining table with her sister, saori, and her mother, mayumi. the silence was normal, and it had been ever since the passing of y/n's father, but for some reason it felt uncomfortable this time. like something was wrong...
"so girls," mayumi began speaking as she used her chopsticks to place various pieces of fish and vegetables in her bowl of rice, "how was school?"
y/n watched her mother's movements. she still had that shake in her hand. y/n had always noticed it, but her mother never brought it up. she had always stayed quiet about anything regarding her troubles; it had been like that for years. and once she got laid off her office job after attending under the influence of alcohol multiple times, her anxiety only grew worse. it was worrying for both of the girls, but there was nothing they could do to get her to open up.
"it was fine," y/n answered before taking a bite of her food. how else was she supposed to answer that? nothing was out of the ordinary. there were still the same people giving her headaches and making it harder and harder to focus in class.
saori, though, didn't speak. she had barely even touched her food.
was she even paying attention?
y/n kicked her leg lightly, immediately breaking her away from her thoughts. she jumped a bit and looked up at the two.
"oh, um...school was..." she took a moment to think before inhaling and holding her breath. usually she wasn't this...fidgety. y/n was concerned, to say the least. whenever something bad happened, she was usually the first person saori would tell, but right now, she was completely out of the loop.
"it was good," she finally answered. she didn't seem any less nervous than before.
mayumi didn't seem to notice, though. or maybe she was just brushing off as an attempt to try and avoid stressing out about whatever her daughter may not be telling her. "are you still feeling sick, saori?"
she cleared her throat. "about that..." she dropped her chopsticks and let them slide down her bowl, and her eyes fell back down to her lap.
"i was never sick."
"what?" y/n raised an eyebrow. not sick? with all the vomiting she's been doing for weeks now? yeah, okay. sure. if she was trying to lie to make mayumi worry less about her, she was doing a poor job.
for weeks, saori had been complaining about how she would vomit almost everyday, experience nausea, and feel weak. y/n just assumed it was a stomach bug, but that just wasn't the case.
"mom, i'm pregnant."
and just like that, the uncomfortable atmosphere grew worse. both y/n and her mother felt their hearts drop to the floor, and maybe even beyond. it was like the entire world flipped upside down. y/n was aware that saori had a boyfriend, but mayumi was another story, and she was entirely against the idea of it. and if she knew what kind of boy saori was dating, she'd be against it even more.
