The next morning, we all wake up and get ready to go strike. Race wakes everyone up and then we all head to the Circulation Gate.
We all stand in clumps chanting things like "Stop the World!" and "No more papes!" when I hear my name being called.
"Race, Fox!" Spot calls us over. "I'm seein' things. Tell me I'm seein' things." We follow his gaze and see Jack standing amongst the scabs.
"You ain't seein' things, that's Jack." I say with hurt in my voice.
"What's he doin' with the scabs?" Race asks with the same emotion
"It can't be happenin'. It ain't happenin'." Kid Blink mumbles to himself not believing what he was seeing.
"Hey, Jack, it's me,Mush, lookit me, look, will ya?" Mush walks up to Jack trying to get through
"Where'd he get them clothes?" Boots asks no one in particular
"Mr. Pulitzer picked 'em outhisself. A special gift to aspecial new employee. Only notso new, huh, cowboy?" Weasel says as he passes by.
"He sold us out!" Spot says grabbing my hand. "Ya dirty scab! I'll soak ya!"
I release Spots hand as I run up to go walk alongside Davey.
"Aww. You wanna talk to him? Come on, come on. Sure. Go right ahead." Weasel tells me and Davey as we glare at Jack.
We walk up and Davey speaks up.
"So, this is why you didn't escape last night. You're a liar! You lied about everything. You lied about your father being out west, 'cause he's not out west! You didn't even tell me your real name!" Davey yells
"So? Whatcha wanna do 'bout it Dave?" Jack says back
"I don't understand you." Davey says, hurt lacing his tone.
"Oh, so let me spell it out for ya. You see, I ain't got nobody tucking me in at night, like you. It's just me, I gotta look out for myself." Jack retorts
I finally decide to step in. "You had the newsies."
"Oh, what'd being a newsies ever give me but a dime a day and a few black eyes? You know, I can't afford to be a kid no more, Y/n. For the first time in my life, I got money in my pockets. Real money. Money, you understand? I got more on the way and as soon as I collect, I'm gone, I'm away. Alright?" Jack snaps back at me
"Well, that's good. That's good because we don't need you! We don't need you! All those words you said, those were mine and Daveys!" I finally had enough
"Yeah, but you neva' had the guts to put them across yourself, didja?" Jack asks mockingly
I turn to look at him. "I do now." I say as me and Davey turn away.
Davey stops and looks at Jack.
"What'sa matta'? Got a problem?" Jacks asks
Davey turns and races towards Jack. Weasel and a few bulls pull him back.
"Maybe you'd like a new suit of your own huh?" Weasel aks
"Never! Never!" Davey yells "I'm not like you!"
Shouts from all of the newsies ring through the square. Somehow I can place a name with each voice.
"Traitor!" Spot.
"You make me sick!" Blink
"I trusted you!" Boots
"Seize the day, huh, Jack?!" Race
I try to drown out the ringing in my ears and the thoughts spinning through my mind.
'No, I trusted him, he was like another brother. How could he? Why did he do it? I believed in him. It's my fault, I went after him last night. Fuck me. I'm a disappointment. I should run away and never come back. It would make things easier.'
