{10 Years Ago}

My eyes fluttered open as I heard muffled voices coming from downstairs. I tried ignoring it, telling myself it was just my parents talking, but being nosy trumped my drowsiness and I decided to investigate.

With a groan, I got up from my bed and headed downstairs, still half asleep.

As I tiptoed towards the living room, the voices became louder and clearer. When I approached I heard an unfamiliar voice, quickly pausing and hiding behind a corner.

His voice was harsh and very insistent. "You know you can't just leave."

I peeked out from the corner very slowly, curious as who my dad was talking to. A tall and lanky man stood in the open doorway with his face hidden by the low lighting from outside and the hoodie he wore.

"I already left. I'm not coming back and it's final." My dad responded his voice now sounding impatient and irritated.

'What're they even talking about? And who was this guy?' Questions filled my head as I continued eavesdropping.

The man took a step closer, pointing a finger at my dad's chest. "You knew what you were doing, making that agreement.
You can't just back out because you have a family now!" He rose his voice menacingly through gritted teeth.

I froze, my heart pounding in my chest, pondering what my dad had really gotten into.

He stood his ground, his voice firm. He was strong willed or you could say hard-headed and I got my stubbornness from him. "I don't care and I won't repeat myself again."

The stranger shook is head and sighed. "You can either come back, willingly, or he takes what he wants anyways. You're in too deep to escape now and this was never- "

I gulped, my thoughts cutting off the conversation, not liking where this was going. Who was 'he' and what did he want- who did he want? At this point I was seriously thinking of just going back upstairs and minding my business for once.

Suddenly, my dad looked back, as if sensing my presence behind the corner. I ducked back behind the corner even though I knew I had already been discovered, as I cursed to my almost five-year old self.

(However 5 year olds curse anyways.)

He mumbled something to the stranger and rapidly closed the door, as I felt my heart stop. He then called out to me, reality setting in that he truly saw me.

"Koko, what are you doing? Come out here please." He asked me with a more gentle voice than he was speaking with the stranger. I sheepishly stepped out from my hiding spot, embarrassed to have been caught eavesdropping.

I wouldn't look him in the eye or say anything but have a guilty expression on my face and I noticed that his face softened, his eyes filling with concern and sadness.

He picked me up with a sigh and carried me back to my room as I leaned my head onto his shoulder, tiredness fully returning regardless of how scary that conversation was.

I just felt immense safeness in dad's arms and if the whole world were ending I would still feel safe as long as he was there. I loved my mom too, obviously, but I just clicked with my dad more for some reason.

He laid me back onto my bed, tucking me in and leaning over to kiss my forehead. Once he stood back up to leave, I grabbed his hand, wanting to ask a million questions.

"What were you guys talking about? And why did that guy say that you couldn't escape?" He sat down on the edge of my bed closing his eyes and thinking.

"Honey, those are adult problems and you shouldn't worry about such things. Instead you should think more about how tomorrow is your birthday and you get your quirk too!" He excitedly said, swiftly changing the subject as he lightly tickled my sides as I broke into laughter.
When he stopped I smiled, also getting excited and beginning to think about the possibilities of what I might get.

"Ok ok! Im gonna go to sleep so fast so that tomorrow comes faster and I can see if I can use my quirk to beat you in a fight!" I remarked, giggling as I challenged him.

"Oh, we'll see about that." He replied lightly laughing at my bold statement. "Get some good rest and sweet dreams my little coconut."

He kissed my forehead one last time and left, leaving me to fall fast asleep. 'I can't wait to show Zuku and Kacchan when I find out!' I thought as I soon drifted to sleep, sinking into the abyss named 'dreams'.
