Chapter Twenty: Hurt People, Hurt People.

Ivory's bottom lip quivered as she fought away another set of big tears. She looked at me then at the picture that I had of Beyoncé sitting on the nightstand. She looked at me again and began crying harder.

I knew she missed Beyoncé, I did too, but I didn't want to bother her while she was dealing with family. After the things she had told me about her family, I knew that this was still hard for her to deal with. I didn't know how to help her and I didn't want to be on the phone with a crying baby while she dealt with that mess.

Ivory wouldn't take her eyes off of that picture.
The sun had barely risen and we had barely woken up, but Ivory was dead set on who she wanted.

Even as I gave her kisses and told her good morning, she was not focused on me at all. I wiped her tears away, letting her cry. When she looked at me, I had to call Beyoncé. She wouldn't be annoyed picking up for Ivory.

And she wasn't. I set the phone up so she could only see Ivory and watched my daughter light up when Beyoncé came on the screen.

"Hi my pretty baby," Beyoncé squealed and Ivory went crazy, the smile on her face growing wider until she couldn't smile anymore. "Look at that face. You been crying?"

"She's been crying since she woke up, staring at your damn picture."

"My baby just misses me, it's okay."

I wanted to tell her that I missed her too, but it didn't matter. She knew that. She still had things to deal with. I didn't want to pile on top of that, knowing the type of person she was. I told her I missed her and she would focus on me the entire time she was gone, disregarding the reason she left in the first place.

"I don't know what I'm gonna do."

"She's gonna be okay. If anything while I'm gone, she should cling to you."

"Then you don't know her. This little girl wants you."

They were thick as thieves. Ivory was so calm with Beyoncé sitting on the phone, even though Beyoncé wasn't even speaking to her anymore.

She smiled like a schoolgirl, "That's my baby. I can call when she wakes up and when she goes to sleep."

"Don't do that when you aren't here for a reason.
She's just going to have to understand and be patient," I said and Ivory watched me as the words came out of my mouth. She knew what I was saying and that was fine, but her little ass will be alright.

"She's gonna be so happy when I get home."

"How is everything over there?" I grabbed the phone and laid Ivory on my breasts.

She grinned at me when she saw me, "Damn, look at you. I see you every single day and that face just gets prettier and prettier. How the hell did I get this lucky?"

"Stop," I looked away from the phone, smiling wide enough that it hurt my face.

"Don't move, come back. Let me see you." I looked back to her, the throbbing in my heart growing stronger. I wanted her to come home, wanted to give her a kiss and tell her how much she was appreciated here.

I was about to tell her I love her, but a door opened in her background and in came voices that I didn't recognize. I imagined her entire family was there once they knew Beyoncé was coming. She looked up from the phone and laughed before standing up.

"I gotta go baby. I'll call you tonight."

"I love you."

"I love you the most."
