"Aaagh, where could it be..."
Jeanette continued to rummage through the books and papers scattered across the desk. She checked her pockets to see if she was sitting on it, but it just seemed to have vanished into thin air like dew before the morning sun.
Although, she was known for misplacing items easily.
Light filtered through the blinds, picking out clouds of dust in the air. Her best friend seemed to notice the clamor and shaking of his table; he turned toward her, confused, backlit by the dawning sun.
The two had a late-night study session, which had turned into a sleepover; they were sucked into the limitless abyss of finals, for they had eventually decided to give way to exhaustion. Simon hated doing school work last minute, especially for exams, but Jeanette had dragged him into volunteering with her at the local animal shelter.
"What are you looking for?" asked Simon.
The girl looked around her again before locking contact with his eyes. "Umm, my phone is missing. Could you ring it, please?" She put her hand to her ear, pinky and thumb out, to gesture a telephone. It was unnecessary, but she always had this unconscious habit of using signs with her hands.
His peach-pink lips smiled. "Yeah, sure." He nodded his head and pulled out his phone. He dialed in her digits, and the phone rang.
The boy's profile glittered, the rest of his face lost in shadow, making his eyes all the more memorable. Jeanette loved to admire it, and she smiled.
Suddenly, the pretty, magnetic instrumental of her favorite song began to play.
"Oh, it's under the books—"
"Wait, don't—!"
Jeanette's emerald eyes widened, her heart beating out of sync as she tried to grab the phone out of his grip. But she let go, slowly, as she watched him analyze the screen. A heavy blanket of silence fell over the pair, only the muffled sounds of the melody. His phone in one hand, her phone in the other.
Simon's expression softened into a smile as he turned to his counterpart, eyes glued to the caller ID. "Love, with two red hearts, is calling." He put down his phone and fixated his eyes on hers.
She felt her heart and lungs working as if trying to power a city's electricity. Her brain had ballooned into a misshapen of butterflies and lame excuses, yet neither seemed to good enough to divert the conversation.
Simon's mouth opened, but no words came out; Jeanette's breath caught in her throat. However, she couldn't break free of his gaze.
He smiled. He liked her back.
She could read it in his eyes, but she did not know what kind of love it was. Compassion? Neighbors? Older Brother?
She smiled. It wasn't exactly how she always planned it would go, but it was one way to confess.
