At dinner, it was quiet. Nobody spoke. Except for my mother who really wanted to make conversation. “This is the worst dinner I’ve ever been to”. I said. “Can I be excused?” My mother had a horrified look on her face. “No, you’re with company”, she said. I rolled my eyes. “My boyfriend is not considered company”, I said. But she shook her head. “Boyfriend or no boyfriend, you still need to be respectful of others”, she said. I looked down at my food as Harry stood up. “May I get that for you, Mrs. Gomez?” He asked. My mother nodded. “Why yes Harry, you may. You’re such a sweet boy”, she said. Yeah, mom. If you call him cheating on me and lying to me a sweet boy, you’re delusional. But whatever you say. I got up and followed him into the kitchen.
I stood beside him as he washed dishes. He caught my gaze, but he looked down at mom’s plate. “You’re family’s really cool”, he said. I laughed. “You’re funny”. I said. He looked at me with those beautiful green eyes of his. “I’m not kidding. Just because your father doesn’t like me, that doesn’t mean that he’s not cool. He really is”. It was totally silent for a second. Finally, I said. “You know, you don’t have to try so hard”. He got really annoyed then. He put down the dishes, dried his hands off and he put his hands on my face. “I’m not trying hard. I’m being myself”. He said- kissing me. I pulled away from him. He got annoyed. “I don’t understand. Why can’t I kiss you?” he asked. I started to answer him, but he cut me off. “Don’t answer that, because your parents are right there looking at us. Wow, that’s a violation”, he said in a sarcastic tone. “I’m sorry, babe. I just…” he cut me off. “Do you even want this relationship?” He asked. I got mad then. “Of course I want this relationship. The question is, do you? I know about you and Abigail kissing at the mall. I know that. You know that hurts Harry. Or are you too stupid to see it?” His face was bright red. “Why are you being so bitchy?” he asked. I gave him a look. “I’m not bitchy. You’re bitchy”. I said. He put his hand into a fist and punched the table, like he was so angry. “You think I’m this perfect human being. But I’m not. Like going out with Abigail. I know. You worry about me all the time. I know. I’M NOT PERFECT, ANGELICA. Or are you too stupid to see it?” My eyes were wet. My parents came into the kitchen to find out what was going on. “What’s all this ruckus?” My mother asked. Harry looked at my parents. “I’m sorry, Mr. and Mrs. Gomez. But your daughter clearly doesn’t want me”. He said. I tried so hard to explain to them exactly what happened. But it was way too late. They believed Harry this time. “Angelica go to your room, we’ll discuss this later”. I didn’t even fight. I just went upstairs. “It’s over, Angelica”. Harry said as he walked away.
